Squeaky Brakes

Hi,

I've been dealing with Squeaky brakes for about a year now, and this is my last hope before I give up and take it to a shop.

First noticed squeaking about a year ago. Thought it was too early to have the pads go out, but ordered new sets, and installed them. Squeaking went away for about a day and then came back.

I did more research and was suggested to replace the rotors. I ordered new rotors and installed them. They came with their own pads, so switched the Bosch pads out for the new rotor pads. Noticed the Bosch pads didn't have much wear. I drove on the new rotors and pads and didn't have squeaking until a little bit later. This really frustrated me. The squeaking did go away initially, but would come back. So messing with the brake pads did do something to repress the sound, but it always came back.

I noticed the sound is primarily coming from the back tires, so I figured maybe the e-brake isn't working correctly, or maybe the pads are pushing the brackets into the rotor. I decided to fully replace the e-brake shoes, lube up the brackets and pads that slide in the channels, cut off the metal clip that chirps when the pads are too low (Noticed they had contact before), and put it all back together. Jump into the car and started to test the brakes out. Initially, no sound. Hazzah, but once I started back home from my .5 trip, the squeaking started to come back.

I'm at a loss of what's creating the squeaking noise. I've done everything I know that could stop the squeaking. Before I take it into the shop, have any of you ran into a similar situation, and if so, what was the solution?

Thank you!

The brakes on my 17 have squealed for a few years now. Every time I press them. Been to the dealership numerous times about it and they saw there is nothing wrong with them and that they are in good shape. I am out of warranty so they could make some money off me by telling me there is a problem, so I guess I believe them. It annoys me every time I hear them, but I have no idea what to do about it, if there is anything to do.

Same thing here on a 2016. Mine are still good. It's just the right rear brakes.
I used this on mine and it works for a month or two and then it comes back.

Squealing brakes are symptoms of a problem . You might try a reputable shop that deals mostly with brakes, especially since the dealership can't find anything wrong.

If the brakes are not pulsing your brake pedal you should do a proper "bed in". Look up "bedding your brakes" on Youtube. I bed mine about every couple of years and my brakes have never squealed. After a proper bedding your brakes should be very quiet and grab better.

Funny enough, I normally do this after a brake change in general. Didn't know this actually had a separate term. I was just taught it's how you lock the brakes in. I'll take it out and follow the proper process to bed the brakes, but I have my doubts. I'll report back in if that works.

I’ve tried the bedding thing - and not the one depicted in Game of Thrones - and either I did it wrong or it didn’t help. A brake shop may be next.

Thumbs up

Hi, Quick Update.

After reading all the suggestions, and checking out some other cars with similar issues, it sounded like I needed to try brakes that are intended to be quiet. After doing some research, I decided to go with Akebono Ultra-Premium Ceramic. They advertised as being quiet, and many reviews confirmed it. I got them off amazon. I also snagged some brake grease from AutoZone. Outside of new rotors, decided to do a whole new brake job. Figured I'd rather spend another $130 and take the chance to solve it myself before having a shop charge me +$500. I've posted to links below.

Front Brakes: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07RRFFW...roduct_details $63.21
Rear Brakes: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07RN9W6...roduct_details $53.98
Brake Grease: https://www.autozone.com/greases-and...8oz/826455_0_0 $14.99

I removed all the brake pad hardware, replaced with the new set that came with the brakes.
I greased the brake pad tabs that go into the hardware on the mounting bracket.
Once I had the pads in the mounting bracket, I greased the back of the pad a little and installed the caliper.
WARNING: MAKE SURE GREASE NEVER TOUCHES THE PAD AND ROTOR. WIPE OFF DILIGENTLY IF YOU DO.

I did this for all four brakes.

I then bedded the brakes with four 30mph stops, five 40mph stops, four 50mph stops, and two 65mpg stops.

I've driven the car for two days now, and not one squeak. It's weird, because my brain almost gives me a ghost squeak since it's so used to the squeak at certain times, but it's oh so quiet now. If they start squeaking anytime soon, I'll give an update. Thank you for all the support. Hopefully this update helps fellow owners in their quest for quiet brakes.

So far, NO MORE SQUEAKS!
