CVT - reservations

I just paid off my 2017 Platinum with 84,000 miles and plan to keep it as my daily for as long as possible. However, I’m seeing and reading about Nissan CVT failures all over the place. I haven’t had any issues yet, but seeing as I’d like to buy a Jag F-Type convertible, a car that I know is going to take some money to keep on the road, I don’t want my daily doing the same. I’ve had the trans inspected at 70K and they said it was “fine” and didn’t change any fluid or anything. What would you guys do?

70k and they said the fluid was fine. What a joke. My CVT fluid was black at 40k. I do a drain and refill every 10k since then. When you pull the plug only about 2 1/2 quarts come out. I do that 2 times in a row every 10k and the fluid stays clean. There are two simple ways to keep the CVT in prime condition. Keep the fluid clean and don't beat the **** out of the car. The bloodsucking dealer will charge you 250 for a drain and refill. You can get 5 quarts of NS3 for about 100 bucks on Amazon. The bloodsucking dealer will tell you the fluid is fine until you need a new CVT then they will stick it up you dry for 4 or 5 thousand bucks.

An important thing to note is that the CVT on the cheaper 4 cyl cars is different than the ones in the Maxima. Maximas tend to fair better longevity-wise.

That being said, rule of thumb seems to be to get the CVT fluid done every 30k. I've been sticking with that and just passed 126,000 miles on my 2017 SL

I have a 2010 Maxima and I change my fluid every 50k miles, or every 2 years. I just completed a 1700-mile trip and turned 190k miles with no CVT issues.

That my friend is because you drive it according to what it was designed to do.

I get such a kick out of the backyard mechanics that frequent these forums, it's easy to tell you are not one.
Happy motoring!
