True and that explains the rough idle I get only with that MAF. But if you look at other MAF's some do have an exposed hot wire. I looked at a bunch of MAFs before doing this. If I did it again I would leave some of the plastic in the center covering the brown part and some for the hot wire.

May as well put the hot wire in a 3" tube like Jime, unless you are trying to appear stock.

So from what ive read it seems that you need a good source of engine management to even attempt to run a larger MAF or benefit from one?

Yea if you tweek the injectors, FP, ignition, MAF, or any combo you will need to make adjustments to the ECU. Sometimes you can get a fairly decent tune with matched parts ie: 300zx MAF and injectors without touching the computer. But even from the factory there is power to make with real tuning.

Cool, seems a little extreme for me at this point. Good to know though, maybe I will attempt this in the distant future once I know a good bit more about tuning. Id hate to get in over my head at this point in time.

Man, I got so many ideas from this thread!! Looks like i'l be experimenting on my car when i get off. Weird thing is most of these mods are simple things that i would have never thought of.

I guess my question would be, could you do these mods [bigger MAF, TB porting +tunning] without killing the stock injectors? I know upgrading would be best. Just trying to see what i can get away with!

No, the stock injectors will be fine, but you need to add fuel in there so you can pull more V from the MAF resulting in added timing via the ECU so it (ECU) goes into a different timing cell.

The amount of fuel taken out (MAF V) seems to be proportional to the timing added.

You don't add fuel to indirectly add more timing. The added timing is just a side effect of the lower MAF voltage. You add fuel so you don't run lean.
