Two ECUs

I was thinking about how it sucked that we couldn't get VTC in our 4th gens without going through all the trouble Vsamolov went through (I.e, rewire the entire car) when I had this idea. Keep our 3.0 ECUs for everything (windows, lights, ect. keep as much as possible) and get the 3.5 ECU and only the wiring that is absolutely necessary for the Variable Timing Control to work and not plug anything else into it, using 3.5 Pathfinder TB throttle cable obviously... Granted it's incredibly stupid and this thread isn't meant to ask if it would work, but rather why it wouldn't work, since, obviously someone thought of this before and refuted the idea but I'm just curious to know why.
