New To This...need help.

I'm new to the whole world of engine work...but I got a question. I was planning on getting a turbo set up on my '98 GXE and I want to know if there are engines that would fit the A32 body? I mean I know that there are engines out there that will...but I'd like to know which ones, what there benefits are, etc...If you could offer any advice or link me up with some info that would be greatly appreciated. Keep in mind that I have an automatic.

I honostly think this is the wrong place to ask something like that but what in the world are you talking about, "any engines that would fit" it's not like you have many choices.

I think your question is

With such and such Turbo I'm going to use and as far as what engine modifications are out there, what would be suitable for my FI setup?

Search would solve this problem, as for true engine swaps only the vq35de would drop in with modification

Unless your stock engine is tired, it's VERY boost friendly if tuning is done right.

I'd forgo the money on the engine swap and do the 5spd tranny conversion instead.

I love how ppl always say that...."U can't DO THAT, but.....if you have the money....". I don't need that...I wouldn't ask a question If I didn't need an actual response.

*** the Money ! ! ,

Do you know anyone thats done it?
Have you heard of it?
Which engines?
What modifications need to be done?
etc....

Please only respond if you have some actual info.

well, there is some info to consider....

the maxima is a fwd platform with alot of weight sitting over the front axles already. So that defeats the purpose of putting in anything larger or heavier for that matter. Our engine bay is relatively small for the vq30de already, so theortically you could put a smaller 4 cylinder fwd motor in there.... but then your running to axle/driveshaft issues in angles and layouts... etc and also downgrading from a perfectly over-built vq series engine

Rwd engines like the skyline and such would require massive modifications to the suspension and chassis, considering all the extra stuff you'll need with a chassis not designed for a driveshaft running down the middle.

Only engine swaps around here are within the vq engine series because the chassis and engines share similarities throughout the years.

zamochy this is the advanced performance forum, you should at least read the 4th Gen FAQ's. this topic is more for general discussion forum or 4th gen forum that is 95-99 specific.

and to answer your q. as Larrio stated VQ engines are great for boost AND MUCH MORE PRACTICAL than a totally different engine that doesn't even fit with the specifications of a maxima.

With that said many japanese cars here DO have their JDM counterparts (240sx and S13, S14 silvias, maxima and I30 have the cefiro in japan) but unlike the 240s where dropping in a JDM SR20DET is not a complicated job (since s13 and s14 already come with sr motors in japan) the maxima is a FWD layout here in US and a rwd layout in Japan with a VQ30DET (yes turbo) and because of those BIG differences they are a totally different car. Swapping in engines you only have a choice of the 00-01 VQ30DE-K or 02-04+ VQ35DE

Now to get back to where you are. You have a 98 GXE Auto.

If you go with a turbo your auto tranny will keep holding you back, because of the the difference in gearing and power handling before it starts to slip. also a factor is how much more room the auto tranny takes up in the engine bay to run the turbo and exhaust piping.

People get getter clutches on 5 speeds that can hold more power. with auto you can get a built auto for higher HP with a good high-stall torque converter, but for the price it'll cost you you are better off doing a 5-speed swap, and then throwing in a Turbo kit.

If at this point you're wondering if it's worth it or not i'll give you just one example

hlh0501 - 95 Max T3-T04 Turbo @10psi with Nitrous - 476WHP and 505 ft-lbs of torque on a STOCK engine (with a MEVI intake manifold for more top end)

i've said all i needed to say now YOU have to decide what YOU want with the money YOU have.

So if my car is FWD, cant I drop in a Porsche motor since the motor is in the rear and just turn it around?
