What's the deal here?

Basically, Im asking for opinions here. I've pretty much checked, rechecked, and checked again for anything I've missed, and the results are staying the same.

Best friend buys a 5 spd 96 GXE. Came with Warpspeed y-pipe, magnaflow muffler, 2'' drop, and some 17'' aluminum rims. Now, heres the problem: I can't beat him?

My ks wasn't working because of some bs I don't feel like explaining, and I noticed him constantly pulling me. It's not a big pull, but he just inches away from me no matter where we start. The only advantage I can seem to get is off the line because he dosen't taper his throttle and spins like crazy. If we go from a roll though, he always inches away from me until 115 where his limiter kicks in (thank god).

Turns out my "new" ks dosen't work, so I put a 470k resistor back in. My power came back, but the results are the same. No offense to my friend, hes a good driver- but he dosen't even have a feel for this car yet. His shifts are always 1-2 seconds long, and I can bang those gears like blinking an eye with my B&M...so whats the deal here?

I took into consideration that he has no sunroof, but wasn't there some chasis modification that ended up making the later 4th gens heavier? Im on 16'' SE rims and my tires arn't that big. Keep in mind my car is tuned up except for fuel filter, and I change the oil every 3,000 miles.

My car has 150,000 miles and his has 104,000...anyone think thats the reason?

Dunno but the mileage certainly isn't a reason. The fastest stock 4th gen had 170k on it. There's no reason to believe higher mileage VQs are less powerful. In fact most of the fast ones are high mileage.

I don't mind having 40k on mine though.

yea, mileage definitely isn't a factor. my car has 293k km on the odometer and could still pull a 14.2 if i had my TS ecu in the car. too bad I sold it.

mods do you have on your car... And I'm also not sure if this is the appropriate forum for this thread ... :/

Even if this isn't that correct forum, you and I both know that the smarter individuals cruise the advanced performance area- therefore I care about your kind of input only.

I was leaning toward mileage not being a reason. Let me be more clear of both cars exact modifications to give you guys an idea.

Friends 96 GXE 5speed:
-WS y-pipe
-Magnaflow muffler- rest of the exhaust system is stock.
-KYB AGX
-17'' aluminum rims
-Cone filter in place of airbox.

My 97 SE 5speed:
-WS ypipe
-High flow cat
-Magnaflow resonator
-2.5'' WS Bpipe, OBX 3'' straight through style muffler
-B&M short throw shifter
-JWT pop-charger intake (USIM back on)
-KYB's with S-Tech springs

Im shifting as fast as a snake bites compared to him AND he's holding his gears until he redlines- he still wins, but he shouldn't.

I was just trying to get suggestions on what actions I should take or what I should check?

Well, JClaw states it as correctly as possible, mileage is not the culprit.

You 2 have essenitally the same mods because cat-backs don't do much on these cars.

If you are as good a driver as you claim to be, then the obvious problem will be that your car is not running as good as it should.

Do the normal tune-up etc Or it could be weight differences.

Or, get a dyno.

Just got NGK Iridiums about 2 months ago, so those should be good until Im 80. I guess I'll change the fuel filter and run some sea-foam and report back.

Also I just recieved a phone call from my buddy- his clutch is about out as of 10 minutes ago. Poor guy~

well im going to assume you are pulling no codes on your car, you might want to look into fixing the ks fully by changing the harness if thats what is failing rather than just bypassing with a quick fix. Id go out and get your car dyno'd see how your A/F ratio's are, worst case scenario look into cutting down some weight.

Definately change the harness too. I had to change the harness to fix it. After that the car began pulling way harder.

If he is just pulling away by inches that really doesn't mean anything. There would be tons of tiny things happening for that to occur. I would not stress about it.

Well the whole reason my new ks dosen't work is because the idiots gave me one that is to big. The sensor is the same size accept on the sides where you plug the harness in there are very wide tabs. I shaved them down, but apparently too much, and now the sensor comes unplugged after about 2-3 hard WOT pulls.

other then the bad ks, that prolly comes loose and tight when your flooring loosing connection and it retards the timing. the 96 is a bit lighter, or maybe your not shifting right??? check your compression... fuel injectors, whens the last time you changed your sparks? all maint... questions

95-96 GXE 5spd 2886lb
97-99 SE 5spd ~3000lb

you basically have the same mods, but you weigh about 100lbs more than him. Put your maxima on a diet.

http://lighter.maxdes.net/

With the 00vi and/or a maxima diet, you will own him.
