Which Piggy does it all?

I don't want to stir up old news, but ....

Which piggyback can control BOTH VI and raise timing? Or am I screwed into buying a vafc and an smt7?

No, you can buy a $50 summit rpm switch instead of a VAFC

Megasquirt.

Yes it can be used as just a piggy back on top of your stock computer. But, you will have to tune the ignition timing completely, not just modify the stock timing....unless you can datalog the stock timing from your stock ECU, then you could just copy that information to the Megasquirt for a "base map" then modify only the timing ranges that you wanted to.

Oh ya, you'll also have to switch to a coil pack instead of individual coils, run regular plug wires and run a Ford EDIS 6 ignition module wired into the Megasquirt. You'll need to run a crank mounted trigger wheel and sensor too like I am here:
http://forums.freshalloy.com/ubbthre...b=5&o=&fpart=9

After you've done all this you'll have total control over your timing. Then when you want total control over your fuel for a turbo/supercharger, ect. you'll only be a half a step from it.

This would be a fairly expensive option though if ignition control is all you really want.

Megasquirt for the win! Its alot cheaper too. check out DIYautotune.com for prices. You can build it your self and save about $60 or so. fully tune timing and fuel.

Allen, I thought you were going to use the COP setup? Im going to try thats forsure. I have some ideas. Oh well the edis-6 is a good setup.

Oh and allen I got a '90 s13 to swap mine into. Im picking up my VQ30 in april so Im going to start then. I cant wait!!

The software just isn't there yet for the 6 cylinder COP, I'd prefer it but I have not problems w/ the EDIS route, it's well proven.

Good luck on your project! I've got some goodies and lots o' knowledge for anyone who wants to do one of these swaps.

Common Darius......try reading through my old thread...

Like people have said, it's really the EU, or nothing. Worry about the SMT-7 later, since I think they are still working out the kinks for the VQ. You might want to consider the SMT-6 with a Summit RPM switch.

Right now the ONLY piggyback that has dyno proof of timing advance is the SMT-6 (Two indepedent dynos I might add). SMT-6 also has it's own built in RPM switch and has the ability to tune A/F like a VAFC. IMO On a VQ30 you would only need a SMT-6 cause the engine is limited on it's timing advance, odds are you will detonate before a cam CEL comes up.

If the EU ever works 100% as promised it will be better, however the EU and the SMT-7 are both having programming issues. This is due to Nissan's assinine crank and cam signals that are hard for them to read, you can also blame the Maximas poor aftermarket support for the lack of VQ30 software as well.

I did my part by getting the SMT-6 to work with dyno evidence to back it up. Now im just waiting for the EU or SMT-7 to work as promised, then I will buy one of those two and sell my SMT-6.
