Remove power steering belt-increased power?

Does removing the power steering belt free up hp?? Has anyone actually dynoed a Max prior to and after the power steering belt removal?

Any harm to the power steering system or components if the belt is removed?

yes, it frees up hp, cause there's less drag on the engine, but whether it's practical do so, thats the question.

No, no harm to the system when the belt is removed. I had thr PS belt off my car, and it didn't feel any faster...maybe a little, but that was probably just in my head.

I agree, I drove around without p/s for nearly 2 months, and it was terrible. At the end right before i got a belt on, i got kinda used to it and didnt really mind it anymore, but when i put the belt on, driving the car was heaven. Don't do it, its not worth it at all, i dont feel any less power than before.

I now have a newfound appreciation for power steering.

Thanks for the replies Tavarish and 4x4Max. Well, I finally finished installing my UR lightweight SC pulley on Saturday (Thanks for the help Ptatohed!) Since my PS belt was pretty worn and cracked, I decided to not install it and go for a drive to see what it's like.

OMG, it's horrible. To me, the car is undriveable. It's extremely difficult to turn, even with two hands. Even if it did free up a few ponies, there is no way it's worth it. What is strange is that my 92 Supra doesn't have power steering, and it's actually fun to drive and not nearly as hard to turn. Maybe because it's RWD? Who knows.

Today, I'm going to Autozone and purchasing a new belt.

Without power steering, it is not possible to turn the steering wheel of my car lock to lock with my drag radials on when the car is stopped. I'm not saying it's difficult, I'm saying I don't have the strength to do it. With all seasons on it can be done but it's a big big chore, required full effort with both arms, with the DRs, I'm not strong enough to do it.

The .349346 hosepower you gain from removing the PS belt is not quite worth it...

Two reasons.

a) Your steering rack is a manual one designed to NOT have power steering so your steering ratio is much quicker.
b) Supra being RWD means less weight on the front wheels because of the better weight distribution.

Actually, it's supposed to have power steering. All 3rd gen Supras have power steering. In fact, it has a pretty sophisticated ps system, where it gets tighter as you turn at higher speeds..... I bought the car for peanuts with a bad ps system. It's a restoration project. Power steering on my 91 Supra works beautifully.

Thanks for the feedback.

^^^I remember now... the steering on MKIII Supras is called Progressive Power steering.

Thanks for the link MaximaSE96. That's a little too hard core for me, but it's nice to know the option is still there.

Yeah, at 2600 lbs. Did it all last year in my full weight SE (on slicks it was a big pain to turn fully from lock to lock) and I after driving the car now with power steering back on I would not drive without power steering unless it's a manual rack (muuuuch easier).
