If he's doing the engine swap, why not go ahead and swap the 6 spd while he's at it? it's his car and his perogative.

Should be a couple grand. Can't give an actual since I havnt done it but I would estimate close to 2g? If you do all the work.

im under the impression(by the post count, although that may not be the case, ill take my chances) he doesnt know much about this project...... so being the good person i am, i suggested that the 5 spd works fine with much less hassle, thank you very much

Well considering he has a GLE, it's a good probability he's auto so he's prolly looking to get the engine/trans combo instead of just the 3.5 then source a 4th gen 5spd... but what do I know.

Having had the 5-speed mated to the VQ35, I would definately suggest getting the 6-speed if he drives it hard all the time and (as in my case) if he intends to launch the **** out of it.

If he's only looking for a 13.90 car on street tires, to drive mostly on the street and have some fun, the 5-speed might work fine but then again if he has an auto, I would definately go for the 6-speed since it won't be that much more hassle than a 5-speed swap. And 6-speeds aren't too far from the 5-speeds, price wise.

The 6-speed swap has the reputation of being a huge pain in the @ss (even though all of 3 people have done it) mostly due to the whole flywheel/Crank sensor deal and of course cable vs rod-driven shifter linkage.

i know there is more strain on the 5 spd, and since the 6 spd is made for a more HP engine, but i duno if i would go through the hassle of putting in the 6spd since there is much more dedication and work to be put into it,,, again i am only suggesting my ideas, nothing else

If you are the occasional 1-2 times a day to 6.5K and maybe the blue moon clutch dump, will the 5Spd hold up? The only reason I think 6Spd is cause I have heard a few stories of 2nd and 3rd shattering.

i've always thought the most involved part of a 6spd swap was just the welding on of the mount

The 5sp should also suffer less from drivetrain loss... although I'm not sure to what degree.

Someday I really want to swap a 6sp/35 in... but it's gonna be $$ and time...

The 5Spd has less drivetrain loss, but if you get a hold of an A34 6Spd then it will be balanced out by the more aggressive Final Drive.

If he's keeping the 30 ecu, then nope.... Flywheel is more fun

When I was thinking of doing the 6-speed I would have done it that way:

6-speed trans from a 2002-2003 Spec V - 575$ locally (1st- With the Spec V trans you are 100% sure you have the HSLD - way better than 5-speed VLSD - it is spider gear driven. 2nd- The 02 and 03 Spec V's have 4.42 final drive ratios)
6-speed VQ bellhousing from the stealer - 200-300$
Maxima 6-speed axles - 200-300$
Maxima 6-speed linkage, mounts, ect.

The 4.42 final drive alone would allow a 3.5 4th gen to fully use 4th gear instead of shifting and crossing the traps immediately. And the HSLD would make burnouts less of a pain- better traction. Plus having the 6th speed allows you to run a really aggressive final drive ratio without having ridiculous highway RPMs (5-speed).

o i c. is it cable or rod driven. im assuming cable.. since you included it in the list of things..... do you know how strong those trannys are? i know sentra peeps do that on their swaps. but its made for a 4 cylinder..?!?!?

actually, would it be possible to steal the parts off of a sentra to do a tranny swap?

OT: you have a picture of what kind of hacking needs to be done w/ the 5thgen cps and 6thgen flywheel.

i have a 04 spec v and ill tell you, with the higher final than the 02-03 model i can not take off alot of the times without spinning.

theres no way i would go with the 4.42 final . my 04 spec v has headers and intake and that car spins alot going into second gear with moderate throttle.I think the 4.42 would be a mistake.
If i ever do 6 speed swap i will use the 04- up final i think it will produce better launches and driability and maybe 1/4 times

thought it might not make as big of a difference as the big difference in low end torque, i just want to mention that your 17" rims are like 6" wide right? a lil skinny, but wouldnt make too big of a difference. i believe the tires are 215 45 17.

there 215 45 17 but a 7'' wide rim and thats not skinny a 215 is decent width.
I run a 225 on my max and at 40mph shifting into 2nd i can leave a smoke trail down the road until i let of the gas it wont ever gain traction either i let off on the gas or the engine blows. and this is with a 3.53 final drive . what happens when a 4.42 gets put in!!?
Iam prob as it is when i put in EU and cams gonna have to drive around with DR's if i ever switch to 04 final it will be a must.

If i was RWD i would go with the 4.42 but hes FWD. and maybe my lighter weight magnifies my hooking up problums? A heavier car would prob far better than mine.
But as i said even with the helical on the sentra with only headers and intake it has prob hooking. and my throttle response on my max is far touchier than anything ive ever driven and that makes a hard to do takoff

you need the specv internals, and put it in the maxima bellhousing for it to work. i think thats it.

Can we not just use the diff from the SpecV and put it in the Max trans? Easier (though possibly more expensive) than buying a SpecV trans and Max bellhousing...

I would rather start with a 4.42 gear, and use 26 slicks, than stock gear with 23 inch slicks like I had.
