Tuning, OBD-II Style

i have access to a Snap-on OBD-II scanner and i swear that i remember seeing AFR on the tool. i have used it before and i remember there being graphs of AFR (13.0-15.0 at the time). now since ive picked up a VAFC-II, would it be possible to tune this way? or would it be too inaccurate since its still with a narrowband? planning to dynotune soon but i was hoping i could get it close before that so that it could be really fine tuned at the dyno. what do you think?

PS: the scanner is one of the absolute newest models, my gf's dad is a snap-on salesman so i have access to some pretty new and cool stuff, which i just realized i can use to my advantage

It would deffinitly be inacurate since it's just working off the narrowband o2's, but you already new that, I plan to do the same thing before I go to the dyno though, def. not a bad idea at all to give it a rough tune before you go, it will also help you to be able to program the vafc-II quicker

yeah thats basically what i was thinking. i wonder how inaccurate the narrowband is. could it be like +/- 5%? or you could be looking at 13.5 and actually be getting a 14.0...i figure i will tune it for rich and lean it out at the dyno. maybe i can get ahold of a snap-on wideband...

Unless you want to tune between 14.5:1 and 14.9:1 AFR the narrowband "rich/lean" sensor signals are completely worthless to you.

Unless you have a newer maxima featuring widebands. Ala 05+ G/Zs.

Dang. I should have bought a 05+ G. Osyris + email maps + data logging using w/b + not requiring a dyno or expensive add on w/b = FTW

it wont show below 14.5? or does it show the same signal after that? im not really familiar with NBO2 operation. so does it give the same signal voltage for every value below 14.5 and above 14.9?

Everything below 14:7:1 will just show up as a rich reading. Everything above that will show up as a lean reading. In terms of voltage, anything below stoich will show as .1v, and anything above will be .9v. That's why I like to call them rich/lean sensors because they have no clue what the actual AFR is.

lol. damn that sucks. well i guess im gonna be hoping he has a WB sensor laying around...

PS: as for connecting the VAFC, im not the best at soldering, so i was thinking about using t-tap connectors, like these: T-tap. Is that a bad idea?

Get a 15/30W iron from Radioshack. Theyre under $10, just trust me, GET FLUX TOO! Especially with soldering wires together. I generally use 30W, Flux, Solder(0.032 thickness), and a suction bulb to remove solder. That's my arsenel.

Oh, and try soldering with and w/o flux, and see the difference.

Good luck!

only $10?!?!?! sounds worth it. i have lots of flux, i used to use a soldering gun...but then i broke it and havent gotten a new one. it thought it would be expensive. glad to know its cheap...will be soldering now.

Irons are cheap. Guns, I think are like $30. They make 40 W irons, which are better for larger guage wire, say 18 or so.

I used 255 strand 18G wire in RC cars, I had to pull out my dad's gun in order to heat it up correctly. With the iron, the heat would dissipate through the plug and down the wire without melting the large ammount of solder needed.

For what you're doin, I would suggest something like this: http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...entPage=search

Check them out, you could really go with anything. If you want more help, shoot me a pm.

i went with a 25w since it was considerably cheaper, came with a cold grip and stand, where the 40 just came with stand...lol. not to mention it will do the job fine, just maybe slower. cant wait to get started!
