Camshaft Confusion.

Okay so I have a set of VQ35DE cams and had some questions.

I got the SM adapters, dowel holes set 178* degrees apart, per Dandy's recommendations.

Now I've been told that there have been dynos done on 3.5 camshafts on a DEK, but the All Motor archive shows nothing but speculation, so I'm curious if someone has done this before. Reason being is because I have no idea which cams I actually bought, whether they're off of a Maxima, 350Z, etc.

Has anyone run the Maxima VQ35 cams on the DEK? I'm looking at the specs for the Z camshafts and they're quite a bit better, close to the JWT S1s. Which leads me to my next question.

Using the specs on the Z/G camshaft profile (since I'm able to get a good deal on these cams)

Intake__Lift: 10.5mm
Exhaust_Lift: 10.5mm

Intake__Duration: 248º
Exhaust_Duration: 248º

Intake_Opens: 2º ATDC
Intake_Closes: 70º ABDC

Exhaust_Opens: 70º BBDC
Exhaust_Closes: 2º BTDC

Overlap: -4º
Would the 178* dowels on SM's cam adapters work well with timing? Meaning that would I be able to emphasize midrange and top-end power without losing too much top end, even though these spacers were intially set up for the less aggressive Maxima cams?

Which brings me to my last question. Valve springs. Would the stock VQ35DE valve springs work on my DEK? I'm concerned because since this is more of a jump from the stock camshaft profile, that the DEK springs may not be stiff enough. Or should I go with HR springs? The reason I'm asking is because I can get some stock Z cams with the stock springs for cheap-ish.

Thanks for reading my wall of text

EDIT: Since I'll be revving to around 7k rpms then I will def need the HR valve springs. Any insight on my other questions is greatly appreciated.

To be honest, I have little recolection of this as I had VQ35 Max cams however sold them since I got Dandymax's motor. But I would recmmend changing to HR springs retainers etc since you'll be in there swapping cams anyways.

The camshaft specs you listed are for "revup" 350Z/G35 cams. Standard 350Z cams came in the maxima/altima/quest etc. Quick way to tell which set you are getting is to look at the rear of the cams. If only the intake cams have timing "teeth", they are the latter. If all 4 have said "teeth" then they're the more aggressive "revup" cams.

Just FYI: VQ35 springs are actually softer than VQ30 springs.

Haha well, that only depends if the cam spacers will still work to my benefit, as far as cam timing goes.

And I still gotta buy the new valve springs/retainers. Should I double shim the springs? Where/how do I get shims if I'm buying through an online catalog? Since I'm using at the most a set of 05 Z/RevUps I'm not sure if double shimming is even necessary if I plan on cutting the fun off at 7,200rpm.

And Nismology, are you familiar with how the dowel holes on the SM cam spacers affect the opening/closing events on the cam? This is the last issue I have, since my project will be put even farther off if I have to get new spacers. (Money is tight since I'm at school)

RacerX1320, if you're not able to catch me on aim regarding those parts just hit my PM box.

So, update. I got pictures of the camshafts.

Nismology, can you point out those timing teeth here? are they just the little notched sections on the intake cams?

These are for sale now.

By the way, the timing on the spacers I have will be good for the RevUp Z/G applications. So for stuff that I need...

05+ Z/G Camshafts.
VQ35HR Valve springs
VQ35HR Retainers

But I'm still unsure about the shims...

The little notches are the timing teeth. As nismo said, the Rev-ups have the teeth on all 4 camshafts.

Rev-up cams:

nismology has seen this particular set before

Gotcha. Me wanty

Mtrai, whats your opinion on double shimming HR valve springs if I'm not revving past 7.2k rpm?

Unnecessary in my opinion. HR springs alone should prove sufficient.

Awesome. That makes sense, now that I think about it. HR Zs have a slightly higher rev limit using the RevUp cam profile with HR springs anyway.

I'll call DaveB and see what he quotes for HR springs/retainers, I've pulled some online catalogs that put that combo just under $150. RevUp cams are relatively easy to come by.

Thanks everyone for your help. Nismology you're a great asset to the community.
