I believe I simply removed that cable and had no issues. Assuming that you started out auto, if you removed the cable I'm speaking of, then maybe your ignition switch needs replaced. But, if you didn't physically remove that cable from the car, maybe it's getting hung up and preventing your key from being removed.

Thinking back to when the automatic was still in my car, I believe there was a cable (in the 4th gen at least) that runs from the auto shifter to the ignition switch that prevents you from removing the key unless the car is in P or N. I'm not sure if you started out auto or not, it's not clear to me from this thread.

Car is cool... probebly my last question..... I'm trying to wire up my reverse lights, I looked at the thread from nycmaximas an its confusing... it says splice the orange and the green n whit wires together, now idk if its 3 wires or solid orange to the green w/whit stripe wire... I tried splicing the 3 wires and nothing... I did the solid orange to the green with white stripe and I got reverse lights onlyproblem is, it just comes on no matter the gear lol... as long as the car it on it comes on lol

What year chassis and transmission are you using? I can figure it out, just need to know what year FSMs to look at.
[edit] The orange wire supplies power from the battery and the green wire with white stripe goes to the reverse lights. The back up lamp switch on the transmission connects the two when the car is in reverse. From the looks of the 02, 03, 04 and 05 FSM, the wires that go the the swtich on the transmission are the same colors. I would think that you would want to splice the orange wire from the car to the orange wire goign to the back up lamp switch. And the take the green/white wire from the car and connect it to the green/white wire on the back up lamp switch. But without knowing the years, I'm just guessing.

Yes the green/white is the reverse light... I'm using a 02 GLE, irc the trans is from a 02 maxima too... splicing the green/white stripe to the orange had the reverse lights on... however idk what the "back up lamp switch" is... would that be a 3rd wire??

On a 2002 6 spd, the back up lamp switch is on the top of the transmission (See 2002 FSM MT-15). You need to run the orange and green/white wires to this switch so that when you shift into reverse, the switch closes and your revers lights come on (see 2002 FSM EL-74). When you connect the orange and green/white wires together, effectively what you are doing is bypassing the switch, and that is why your reverse lights come on with those wires connected.
When I swapped a 5MT into my 4th gen and removed my 4AT, I used the harness from the donor car that ran from the chassis to the neutral/reverse swtich (there is only one switch on the 4th gen 5mt). I cut off the inhibitor plug (from my car) and soldered in the plug that came off the donor car. From there the cable came from the reverse/neutral position switch plugged into the conenctor I harvested from the donor car, so that if I ever needed to remove the transmission, I could unplug the switch from the car.
This thread outlines the electrical modifications required to the 4th gen to keep the car functioning like it came from the factory with a 5mt. It sounds like you need to find the harness to connects to this swtich, and install it on your car so that the orange and green/white wires can be plugged into it.

didnt fix the reverse light issue as i dont know what the switch on the transmission look like... if you splice the green/w orange stripe wire on the transmission harness and ground it the car wont go in limp mode, shoot the car wont even start lol

A word of advice: Don't go splicing random wires together unless you know exactly what they do.
The green/orange wire on an auto chassis is wired to the Park/Neutral relay. This wire must be grounded for the ignition switch to be able to send current to the starter solenoid. The grounding of this wire is done through the Inhibitor switch on an auto and the Neutral Position Switch on a manual (although on a chassis that originally had a manual transmission, the wire is a different color).

The "Backup Lamp Switch" is on top of the transmission, right next to the breather tube fitting. Check out the 2002 FSM MT-15

O.k I think I have an idea of what ajm is trying to say... now question is the switch those wires going to the lil brown connector onto the tranny?
