Actually even the best isn't always gonna help. Cops can turn on the instant they see you, whereas your radar detector would not notify you fast enough. Although in some states the cops are required to get TWO accurate reading of you speeding within an alotted distance/time. This would be when the radar would possibly help.

Your absolutely right. It seems more and more cops these days are running instant on and there's no way to escape it. Kinda gives you a minnie heart attack when they hit the button

Best detection= your eyes and $29 whistler. If you can't see them they can't see you.

I don't think I'd count on that late at night or when there are few or no other cars around. I believe if they're trapping by radar, once your detector goes off, that means the radar waves have already reached you and they already have your speed. However, I think for this method they need sight verification when there's traffic on the road. But if you're the only one out there, obviously, whether or not you slow down by the time they see you....

At least this is what I remember from my two 8-hour defensive driving classes. I could be wrong.

True, it is just a risk that you have to take. But I don't see the reason to buy a $500 radar detector. If a cops wants you he can get you.

No, it is not a waste. My Bel 980 has already paid for itself! The majority of Maxima owners here on the .orgy has a detector of some sort. Get the 8500.

I posted this response before, but it might be worth repeating:

Being an ex-police officer, I will tell you that Valentine's are excellent. I have experimented with all different types over the years, and V-1s are the best in my experience. If you look around you should be able to find a used one for around $200+/- Just make sure you check with valentine on the serial number to make sure it is not stolen. They can check instantly.

The tests that myself and fellow officers conducted were fairly unscientific. We would each go out and buy a different detector and then hook many up into one car and set up different types of radar guns/laser guns. Our goal was to see the effects of instant on and also figure out rough advance warning distances. The V-1 ALWAYS won every time of contest we set up. Yes it is the most expensive, but you, at least in this case, seem to get what you pay for. I would also recommend that you check out http://www.valentineone.com/lab/detectortests.asp

It is a summary of a Car and Driver test conducted in February this year.

This is all just my opinion, ultimately go with what makes you happy.
I drive over 100mph a lot, so for me this was the way to go. And for what ever it is worth, I do not know of anyone present or former law enforcement that own anything but V-1s.

Any detector is better than no detector! Don't drive naked!!!!!!!!
