Newbie Amp question
Newbie Amp question
I am hooking up 2 infiniti kappa's and want 500-600 watts going to each sub. I bought a fosgate 1000.2bd amp, the subs say they are at 4ohms, and teh ratings for this amp at 4 ohms, is 250, not 500, does that mean I'm getting only 250??? Is this the right amp for the subs? Thanks.

Yes, you'll only get 250 watts at 4 ohms. You need an amp that is rated at the wattage you desire at 4 ohms.

That amp will do it. It just might blow the subs due to the fact it is a fosgate and is underated. But that amp will do just fine.

I would suggest the JL 500/1 since it is a ClassD amp and will easily pound those Type S subs.

The RF amps are good, but JL is better. If you still want pure wattage (which is not necessary), then get the JL 1000/1. But let me tell you I guarantee you will rip apart the two subs alone with the 500/1.

Do you have single or dual voice coil subs? It sounds like you have SVC subs. What I'd do if I were you would be to go out an get a good mono amp. The link you gave doesn't have a power rating for mono. Can you bridge that amp? If you wire your subs together you'll get a 2 ohm load. Now all you have to do if find a good amp that will give you the power you want at 2 ohms. I'd look into JBL (1200.1 like me) or Orion. If you like RF look into Lightning Audio. RF owns lightning and their amps are very similar in quality. The reason I recommend these over the JL amps that were mentioned is because the JL amps are mono. In order to hook up your subs to them you'll have to run your subs (assuming they are SVC) at 2 ohms anyways. You could pay $350 for a JL 500/1 or get a JBL 1200.1 for less than $300. At 2 ohms the JL will put out 500+ watts and the JBL will put out 1200+ watts. I have no idea how much a 1000/1 costs put I'd assume around $700 for probably less output than a JBL 1200.1. Sure the JLs have extra features that the JBL doesn't have, but you could put the money you saved towards a nice EQ and still come out with an extra $2-300. The JLs are good amps, don't get me wrong, but I personally wouldn't buy one unless I need the power at 4 ohms.
