My friend says it's not wise to do, but it seems like a couple people have done it

Monoblock amps are specifically built to run subwoofers. Multiple subwoofers are generally no problem with them. I have 2 on my monoblock JBL BP1200.1. Your friend doesn't know what he is talking of. In most SPL cars, only mono amps are used on the subwoofers. Typically multi channel amps are geared towards mids/highs because of the stereo sound and higher range on the freq scale, and they are ususally less effecient than the class D switching found in most mono amps.

Should be no problem at all as long as it is hooked up properly (ie total impedance the amp sees is correct). With this in mind it is possibly even better to hook up two like subs to the same amp. Both subs will be assured the same amount of power and perhaps more accuracy with both subs getting identical signals.

"Wisdom - Understanding of what is true, right, or lasting. 2. Common sense; good judgement. 3. Learning; erudition" - American Heritage Dictionary.

From this I take it your friend is not as wise as he/she believes. I have always felt that it takes time or experience in a subject to gather wisdom. It only takes one days experience installing car stereo's to determine the value of a mono amp for powering multiple subs.

do class d amps take more power from the battery than a class a or b amp?

In general class D's are more efficient (ie less battery drain) than same size class A or B's. The trade off is sound quality. That is what makes them ideal for subs. A lot of power, little battery drain, small size, and a little lower sq.

Your friend is a dumbass and is trying to sound kewl...Start by raising your leg to the rear then in a swinging motion kick them in the nuts and tell them to stop talking like the know anything.

Yeah, good point. I missed that. Although the JBL may be stable at 1 ohm, it will run hotter. And probably draw more current.

You could also run a 2 channel bridged mono for a single load to multiple subs. That's how mine are set up, 1.5ohm final. Although as of this morning the amp has given up, not sure why yet.

JBL puts out an underrated 600 watts RMS, so that is far more than 600 max...

"Monoblock" doesn't neccesarily mean "mono sub amp".. there are plenty of full range monoblocks, and are considered by some to provide the best sound quality up front..

Zapco & Sinfoni come to mind.. ie- http://www.ampmanaudio.com/products/details.asp?id=999

Good luck with it.. be sure to get an insulated female spade for the remote turn on.. the clearance is not always good, and they tend to short to the amp chassis..

When the engine is on, you need the cap. When the engine is off, you need the battery.
