You and me both brotha...there are a few people that have done it, but everytime I ask, or search, the people that have done it don't like to give specifics on what they got and what they did...

I'm just starting to get familiar with this subject.. but you want to look for a sub with good xmax & a high QTC (around .7)..

hopefully someone that knows a little more about it will chime in..

I think the Qtc has greater range than that. But you do want high Xmax. This is a very efficient design. The reason people who have mounted in the rear deck don't talk about it is that the full run down can take a few hours to describe. There are so many little holes to fill and area's needing structural reinforcement. Then there are the trunk opening bars. A lot of subs in the rear deck will not even be free air. To be free air the volume of the trunk needs to be greater than Vas.

I have mounted to the rear deck before and will again. But it's not a quick or simple install if done correctly. Also, you have as much enclosure design flexibility as usual. Just have to keep some of the dimensions in check. You can use sealed, free-air, aperiodic, vented, etc.

Look at the Focal F series subs. I'm using a pair of 33F subs (12") in my car and they'll rumble pretty good. I go for more high-end sound than just shear SPL, but they're very nicely done. loud enough to permanently relocate the mirror and bend sheet metal in the trunk, and they're fairly light. not the 50lb that some of the newer stuff is.

As for mounting them on the rear deck, jmax is right.. it'd take days to list all the stuff you have to do, other than remove the parcel shelf and seats and seal up EVERY hole back there.
that took me a complete afternoon in itself.

my plan for this, as i want to get my trunk back and put my spare tire back in, is to mount a sub in the rear deck, but have an enclosure for itunder the rear deck. essentially, it will be a sealed box attached to the parcel, with the sub coming into the cabin.

That's what I was going to do until I realized there is a handle (auxillary trunk release I think) welded to a piece of sheet metal right next to the sub. I'd have to saw the thing off somehow if I was to get ANY box under there.

IDMax 12"s are good free air subs.

You must not have a 4th or 5th gen. A sealed box can be quite easilly built under the deck in 4th and 5th gen cars. I don't know about older cars because I have not seen their trunk. The trunk support bars do extend up into the rear deck. The space between the bars is more than enough for 3 twelve inch subs. I know because I have put three twelves in a box this way. Let me know if you are interested in the enclosure or baffle. As I am switching to something, uhm, different.
