HELP! Intermittent amp problem...

I'm having a problem with my stereo and was looking for help...

- The bass in my system seems to occasionally stop which I figured was a bad ground on my amp. I found a new ground point and mounted my amp to that but that did not fix the problem.

- I happened to be in view of the amp when it happened tonight and I noticed that when the bass stops the amp actually IS still on (power light is lit).

Anyone have any ideas why this could be happening? I'm thinking perhaps:
- RCA cables (which are secured tight)
- Speaker cable (which is also secured tight)
- Amp turn on lead (but would the amp have the power indicator on?)

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: HELP! Intermittent amp problem...

First check for shorts. Especially minor ones that are not easily noticable. Another thing to look for is overheating. The same thing used to happen to my Rockford Fosgate amp all the time. They were known for shutting off when constantly pushed hard. Good Luck.

What do you mean by shorts? Do you mean the power wire grouding out on metal?

As far as heat, its a JL Audio 500/1 class D. The thing bearly gets warm

More info..

No voltage loss either. The JL Audio 500/1 has a warning light for that.

Could it be the head unit? The wierd thing is it happens when ever. Sometimes when I turn on the stereo others when it has been playing for a while.

Well the only thing I can say is there is a bass loss with no pattern. It has nothing to do with heat, the power light is on (on the amp), there was no voltage drop, I don't have to be driving it hard at all.

Let me know if you have a specific question so I can be clearer about the problem.

I was thinking in the speaker lines. I could be as slight as one strand of the positive touching the negative or a ground point of the car or amp. A short in the power would pop the fuse right away.

Oh, I don't think that's it because the jacket of the wires is the only thing exposed where they connect to the amp. On the speaker end I have a banana clip.
