My brother just gave metwo of his old competition kickers for free. They are 10" C10a 8ohm. I'm not into sound systems but I thought I'd try it out. What kind of amp do you think I should use. And should I put them in a box or will they be alright in place of the rear speakers.

If I remember correctly the c stands for competition. The Kicker comps worked best in sealed boxes, probably with 200-400 watts RMS. I have an old pair of C12a Kicker comps being pushed with 200 watts RMS. They do okay but enjoy more power. I once hooked the settup up at 4 ohms and bridged the amp to it's lowest rated impedance and highest rated power, 850RMS. They sounded a lot better but my neighbors didn't like it too much. But it sound fine with just 200. I use these in my home theater system, Isobaric with an adcom amp.

Amps go from 50 bucks all the way to $3000 dollars and more. Any amp can push a sub. However, it's up too you to decide how much you are willing to spend on amp for power and the sound quality.

I would strongly suggest placing them in a box, either sealed or ported. Be sure to buy an amp with enough power for both the subs. If your on a tight budget try ebay.

haha...

never heard what subs sound like without a box but you can try it if you really want! Only free-air subs will work good without a box and then they have to be mounted on a board with plenty of space around them... Anyone know his answer to what they'll sound like with no box? You can browse through a lot of amps at http://www.crutchfield.com and see what you're looking at to spend, check the magnet of the subs to see what impedence and watts they are rated at.

200-300 RMS, 8 ohms each. But they can handle 400 in a sealed enclosure.
