What is the main purpose of tweeters? I know that they are very small speaker-like and usually come with a speaker set but can you install only the tweeters with your existing speakers?

The main purpose of tweeters is to play high frequencies. Ever try to run high frequencies through a sub? It sounds like crap. That's why you need tweeters.

Hey Nismo.. why so many tweeters? Tell me how they sound. I haven't heard of anyone having tweets in the back because it causes the sound from the front to be distorted from the sound coming from the back. That's why people build kick panels and generally leave back speakers out. Just wondering=)

Uhh, rear speakers don't cause distortion.

well I have the rear ones mounted at the top left and right side of the rear windshield pointing downwards. this may cause the sound a little seperated if you sit in the back but in the front they sound ok. might think about moving them when my system is complete cause Im waiting for my RF amp and enclosure to come in. still havent connected the fronts yet so I'll tell you later. btw does anyone know how to remove the door panels to get to the speakers? Ive removed the 3 screws but its still connected somewhere and I dont want to pull on it cause Im not fammiliar with removing these things. THX.

I have a 97 max . I got the 3 screws out and pulled the little snaping pins that hold it on but theres still something connected where the sail panel and the door panel meet and couldnt figure out how to remove that. I want to remove the whole door panel so I can get to the speakers without having to lie on my back and work between the panel and door.

Tweeters are good. You need them. I have seperates in the front with the tweeters at ear level (factory placement for stock system) and coaxial speakers in the rear doors with the tweeters aimed upwards. Some people like the sound in the back seat better, but I think the front sounds a little crisper. I'm pretty sure you can install seperate tweeters, but it may be better to buy a set (6 3/4s and seperate tweets) to properly match frequencies and all that stuff. The set will also include the high frequency crossovers.

oops! you have a 99. So your rear speakers are on the deck right? I don't know too much about that set-up....

My $.02

I have the Boston Pro Series 6.5 Components in the front and rear. These speakers are capable of being "Axis" mounted which means that the tweeter is placed directly over the woofer which is the best location for it. That's what I've done in the rear. Also the crossover is capable of turning down the gain on the tweeters by 1db steps. I have the tweeters in the front mounted in the stock locations, although I might have a friend of mine build me some custom kickpanels to have the set put into. I would have to say that the sound is really nice! Just remember that you want to have most of the sound coming from the front and only use the rear speakers as fill in. As I'm sure most of you know already.
