Replacing Bose HU while retaining Bose Speakers Information (95-99 only)...

This is information on replacing the Bose HU from 95-99 only...

Since I'll be getting the Alpine 7894 in soon, I dug up some specific information about replacing the Bose HU I thought everyone should know.

You'll need a line level converter, anteanna adapter, and a dash kit. You can get the dash kit from Nissan (part number 68475-40U10) but I was quoted $58.65 from my dealer.

First info from Crutchfield... They have the Scosche FAI-1A-Nissan2 ($49.99) line converter/wire harness. Although the picture does not show the wire harness to be complete, I was told by Marie at Crutchfield that it is complete and does plug into both wire harnesses in the dash. The url for that item is http://www.crutchfield.com/S-Tc8ScEq...asp?i=142CNN03. They have the Dash Kit ($12.00) for the double din to single din with pocket. The url for that is http://www.crutchfield.com/S-Tc8ScEq...sp?i=120889000. And they have the Antenna Adapter 12040NI10($9.00). The url for that is http://www.crutchfield.com/S-Tc8ScEq...sp?i=12040NI10. Total shipped should come to right under $80.

Info from Sound Domain... They have the Peripheral OEM Interface Adapter ($59.95) and it shows the actual plug and play harness. The url for that is http://www.sounddomain.com/sku/PERNISAH4N. They also have the Dash Kit ($8.95) which looks cheaper than Crutchfield's kit. The url for that is http://www.sounddomain.com/sku/SCONN2155B. And the Antenna adapter ($3.95). The url for that is http://www.sounddomain.com/sku/SCONDAB. The total there shipped should be right under $80.

There is a second route you can go with Sounddomain if you like wiring. They have a universal Scosche line level adapter (model FAI3) for only $19.95. The url is http://www.sounddomain.com/sku/SCOFAI3. In that case, you'll need a factory wire harness which is model NN03 for $4.95. The url is http://www.sounddomain.com/sku/SCONN03B. That will save you about $25 but you will spend more time wiring everything up.

I hope this helps anyone looking to replace their Bose HU. Now you know it'll cost between $55 - $80 to keep your Bose speakers with your new HU. Maybe this should be stickied?

I got the Bose adapter from Crutchfield. Works good. I would take a pic but I don't feel like dismantling my dash again. Next I needed the Antenna adapter which I got from curcuit city for like $12. There was one more adapter needed, but I don't know where I got that from. Its the one that you plug into the factory harness.

Was the unit you bought at Crutchfield this http://www.crutchfield.com/S-np5ExM7...asp?i=142CNN03? And if it was, are you saying it did not directly plug into the Nissan wire harness? I specifically asked her that question and she said it did... That's why I'm wondering...

After reading this I read that site one more time and came across this:

Harnesses: The input wires are approximately 6" long and have bulleted ends. The output wires are approximately 11" long and have two Molex plug ends, molded to match with factory wiring harnesses. The power leads and antenna turn-on leads bypass the adapter itself, and are connected near the Molex plug.

It answers my question...

Yeah I may be wrong. Maybe the bose adapter did come with the factory harness adapter. I did this like last year, so I don't really member it all.

The unfortunate reason I'm buying the Alpine is because my CD just stopped working. Getting the dreaded 'Err' that's typical with some Bose units. Also, the 95-96 Bose HUs are different and not as asthetically pleasing as the 97-99 Bose HUs. You might want to post a 'WTB: 97-99 Working Bose HU' in the For Sale/Wanted area. Or, there are several inexpensive CD HUs that can replace the Bose HU. Don, PerlMax, and MaximaDave both give quality HUs at great prices for people with all kinds of budgets. And with an extra $80 in equipment from Crutchfield (seen above in this post), it'll be a practically plug-and-play swap with your Bose HU. I hope this helps...

You're right, but you pretty much get what you pay for when it comes to speakers.

After the HU is replaced, I'll save for some Diamond components/rear fill to replace everything with quality speakers, not $80 for all 4 speakers.

I agree. Though it is not possible here (given the fact that maximadriver's CD section went out), I would rather keep the stock BOSE and run new speakers than the other way around. While a decent signal os critical to a good-sounding system, I think that the source unit is not as important as the speakers. Many diasgree, but that is my opinion. If you can get a decent signal out of the bose somehow (I have, using the high-level inputs on my RF amp), yo ucan put the money into better speakers. If it plays CDs, I am happy with it. Plus it is 100% stealth and is easy to operate- even with gloves on!

well, I said "another $80".. so around 160 for 4 speakers should set you up pretty well, and not leave you with a bunch of junk you can't use or sell later on..

I agree with you on the advantages, but good luck on the lifespan of the bose head unit.

comments aside about the authenticity of the previous owners, I doubt the 65yr old couple that owned my car before me used the CD player much at all. And less than a year after I had been using it, it was basically inoperable (actually put scratches into my CDs, burned or not).

I just ordered the Kenwood Exceleon KDX-469 from Crutchfield.com last night. The CD player was $229, the bose adapter was $49, and it came with the installation kit, antenna adapter, and wiring kit if I ever got rid of my bose speakers all for free ... Hopefully when I get it, I'll get everything they said I was getting, lol.
