Bose Headunit - What's the deal????

I am about to get my brand new 2k3 Max and I have been on this site for about 6 months. I have read all about how the Bose system stinks worse than ... But, what I need to know is this - Is it the headunit or the speakers or both? I am big on my trance, euro and progressive music (depending on my mood) and want to be able to crank it whenever i feel the need. But I don't want to mod anything, if i don't have to. If its just the speakers, then I will make the necessary mods, but if the HU needs to be replaced, then I don't know what i'll do. Any help would be appreciated. Also, if anyone knows, what is the first thing I should do once I get the car (answer as you see fit)? Thanks.

One thing to remember, it's "Bose-tuned". The speakers and headunit are made by Clarion and for the exception of the subwoofer sounds almost the same as the regular system on the Max.

Swapping out the speakers is a good way to improve the sound though you're probably better off getting the regular headunit and doing just the same.

I'm big into trance as well and you WILL need to do some work on the system. The Bose system would be adequite for people who listen to EZ FM type stuff, but your tastes require some VERY heavy bass. I think that a good place to start would be to take out the Bose sub and add your own (may I reccomend JL Audio ) with an appropiate amp. You will not be able to enjoy that type of music (or even hear most of the low bass!) with the Bose crap.

This setup will sound decent (although I also put in an aftermarket head unit), but for me it wasn't enough. I decided to upgrade and amp all the speakers as well. The Bose speakers in the car sounded very good to me, they just have no mid-bass or volume. Trance and Euro use the whole freqency spectrum...with emphasis on the bass.

Oh, when you put an amp and sub in there, your car will rattle like crazy, be prepared to invest some time in making it sound good and stop vibrating.

ps: Just a side note, I have been hooked on Internet Radio that I play through my Audiotron on my home theater (a device that can stream MP3s from your PC and internet radio digitally to your home theater). They have lots of comercial-free trance, dance, and euro stations for free! On X-mas I was listening to it thump all day long on my two 15" subs as I worked in my garage Now I just have to find a way to record it to a CD so I can bring it in the Max, and run some speakers to the garage as well.

Oh, if you can reccomend anyplace to get trance MP3s or *gulp* CDs, help a brother out

Re: Re: Bose Headunit - What's the deal????

I have seen you post here many times and would absolutely be willing to help a brother out. I was afraid of what you told me was true. Certainly with trance, euro and progressive you need the entire spectrum of frequencies, but I don't want to mess with the HU since it has the steering wheel controls and I just want to keep it stock as much as possible. If I go with a replacement sub, do I really need an amp? Are the mids and tweets good enough too? I am 28, and at one point in my life (between 16 and 23) I was driving a ford escort with 2 pioneer 10s in a box with a pioneer HU with equalizer, blah blah blah and loved all that bass and control over the music. I still want that same control, except now I have a family and a 2 year old that won't appreciate that bass in your face type setup. Don't know what to do.

As far as recording streaming audio from the internet, get yourself Total Recorder. You can find the trial version somewhere, can't remember where, but you can find it. Then, go to astalavista dot com to get the crack for it. Takes some work, but once you have it setup, you can record anything that is streaming through your audio card. Then burn it and enjoy. What stations were you talking about that you listen to on the internet? I know of www.di.fm and m1live.com. That's about it for me. DJ Doboy has some good CDs too that I actually just bought and am waiting for a little xmas present to myself. Let me know what you think about the stereo biz. thanks spta97.

Re: Re: Bose Headunit - What's the deal????

Here's a tip: Look for software called Total Recorder. Ihave the eval veriosn of total recorder. It's OK. Or, better yet, get a Soundblaster card for your PC. Make sure it has the feature to record "what you hear." With that feature, while you listen to internet radio or play MP3s thru your computer, you can tell your recording software, like CoolEdit, to record the "what you hear." part of the soundcard. Result: MP3s or internet radio recorded as .wav
