2000 Maxima speaker installtion help
I have run into a problem with my non bose system maxima. I am trying to install some infinity 652i 6 1/2" speakers into the front and rear doors. The problem is that they hit the glass when the window is down. Crutchfield swears that the stock speakers that I removed are supposed seperate from an adapter/spacer ring with 4 screws. Then I am supposed to use the adapters they sent me together with this and install my speakers no problem. Well, the stock speakers are a 1 piece clarion setup that definately does not seperate so the spacer can't be reused. I took off one of the door panels in the rear and it is the same exact setup. So I am looking at 4 speakers with the same installation problems. I logged on to crutchfield this morning and now they don't show any speaker as fitting a Nissan Maxima 2000 non bose. It must be because of the numerous calls I made last night telling them that their adapter kit is worthless since the stock speakers don't seperate like they claimed. Anyone else out there faced this problem? Please help with ideas. Thanks.
I think it's either the 2001+ or the Bose that has the white plastic speaker mount. I've heard of other people in your position and they cut the clarion speaker out of the plastic (destroying it).
Another option (that I did on my 2k3) is make some speaker mounts of your own. It's very easy:
1) Get some 1/2" MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard)
2) Cut a ring with the center large enough to allow your aftermarket speaker to fit into.
3) Trace the factory speaker on the MDF and cut another one (so the mount holes can line up.
4) Glue & screw them together - this will give you an additional 1" of clearance..should be enough for your application. If not, use 3/4" on one of the rings.
5) Mount it to your door (by using the factory screws or drill new holes if you have to.
6) Put the door trim back on to test for clearance (if you didn't go over the hight of the factory mounts you should have no problem).
7) Screw your speakers into it.
On mine I also put an insulating foam strip on the bottom where the mounts meet the door to keep it air tight. I also caulked around the seam for the 2 rings for the same reason.
I haven't installed the speakers yet (still doing the amp) but they fit fine and hopefully I will have no problems (others have done the same).
The materials were as follows:
1) RotoZip Revolution w/hole saw attachment = $189 (you could use anything ie: jigsaw but this made the job a snap).
2) 2' x 4' x 1/2" MDF - $4
3) Rubber insulation strip (with self adheasive side) - about $6
4) Liquid Nails caulk - $4?
5) #6 x 3/4" screws - $3
6) Doing it yourself - priceless!
I had a lot of fun doing it. I've heard of other people doing it out of fiberglass but that is outside my knowledge (for now
). If you are interested in doing it, I can send you the pics of what mine look like.
