Remote starter with key for the Viper 790?

I am thinking about getting the Viper 790 installed by a stereo shop in Houston but I only have one key (bought the car used and it came with just one key) for my 2k Max. To get another it would cost me around $150, so I was thinking about just having a key cut by a locksmith. Granted it that it doesn't have the chip but the other key is in the remote start module. Does it work? I am trying to save money because my car just got broken into and the Viper is going to cost $500. Appreciate any input.

BTW, Is $500 for the Viper 790 installed reasonable? I searched on this site and it is about average, I think...

$500 installed for the Viper sounds reasonable. As far as the key is concerned, I'm pretty sure that you're gonna have to get one of the ones with the chip in it from the dealer, or else it won't work. But, I'm not 100% sure on that, so I'm sure one of the experts will respond on this to confirm.

I have the Viper 550ESP right now, and I love it. It's a very good alarm. I do plan to upgrade to the Responder 790XV this Spring though, just so I can have another cool gadget. Plus, I would like to know when my alarm is going off, and the fob beeps or vibrates when it does with the 790XV.

Later,
-Nick

Yes you must spend the 150 to get the chip key.

I'm in houston, and I'm getting my Viper 790 next week for 250. Then I'm just going to find a place to install maybe around 150 with 5-speed remote start. Total is 400. PM me if you want one for 250 and find your own place to install.

Check the warranty issues on doing this. Usually, the warranty is void on DEI products if you purchase it without install and have it installed somewhere else.

I don't care about warranty, I'm doing 5-speed autostart so thats going to void it anyways. DEI makes good products I don't think anything will happen to it. And if anyone does want one tell me so I can ask they guy for a better deal. I live in Sugar Land. Looking for a place to install it though.

no, it will not void your warranty if the DEI dealer you bought it from installs it

Do you have a crystal ball in front of you? Warranty is very important believe it or not. Spend the few extra bucks and have an authorized DEI dealer install it.
