Capacitor holes are stripped, cant tighten screws.

I dont know what happened, I guess it just happened out of nowhere, I didnt even realize it. I have a 1 Farad RF cap but I cant use it because the top bolts wont securely tighten into the holes, they will always stay loose. WHat can I do, teh cap is still good, is there anyway to fix this? =/

Get the next larger size tap and tap it out. Then get bolts or set screws of the appropriate diameter and pitch.

What exactly do you mean by tap? You mean that the holes can be replaced? Where would I go about finding this?

to get mine off (becuse i had the same problem) i disconnected the battery then cut a slit with a hacksaw on the top of the damaged bolt (enuff for a screw driver to unscrew it) then took it off and got new matching bolts

A "tap" may be used to thread a hole. Sears or any hardware store keeps many sizes in stock. I don't know if you have enough clearance on the blind side of the hole to tap it out. This is a fairly common problem with brass fittings. They are used instead of copper because they are harder but still have high conductivity. But compared to steal are quite soft. If you do have clearance on the blind side of the hole you may also be able to place a steel or brass nut back there to hold the bolt or set screw.

The problem you have is very common. You have over tightened the screw, and no longer can you use it. You can't tap it right because it is lead, therefore to soft to hold. Most manufacturers of caps will repair it for a charge of about $35 bucks. That is far cheaper than replacing the cap. Call the Number on their website, and see what the going rate is.

Rockford Fosgate 1.0 Farad? Its nto THAT cheap, I thought it was pretty good. ANyways, I work at sears, so I got a couple of my friends to explain to me the whole tapping technique, it doesnt look easy, and could get quite costly.

Someone mentioned using a Helicoil in the stripped holes, which is a good idea. One thing I thought of is to get two long screws (with the heads cut off) brazed/welded into the stripped holes. Now you'll have screw terminals instead of threaded holes.
