install Q's for 1994 GXE
hello all,
my factory tape player just keeps playing back slower and slower and my two original front speakers are all worn out so I figured...what a good time to buy some new car audio stuff. now i'm not going to spend a lot at all so there will be no alpine, rockford fosgate, or kappa purchased here...but i do have a few questions for all of you:
1) front speakers. stock size is 4x6. would you suggest keeping this size or will something like 6.5 fit without too much busywork? unfortunaely, i can't realy afford seperates. i saw some 4x6 2 ways but the smallest 3 way size seems to be on the 6.5s. i mean, anything will sound better than my decade old blown speakers but as long as i'm going to be in there, might as well make it sound as nice as possible.
2)head unit install kit. i'm going to buy a single din unit and wanted to know if there were any install options besides those generic kits that give you that silly unusable pocket below the player. although the maxima cupholder is hopelessly inadequate it still makes for a good miscellany drawer.
3) what are the size of the rear speakers on the gxe (non-bose)? are they 6x9 or 6.5?
thanks for any replies!

I would suggest going with Concept Audio for your front and rears. I believe your rears are 6x9, but I have an SE so I can't say for sure. I say keep the stock front speaker size until you are ready to do some cutting, and then step up to a 6.5 component system. My friends shop sells concept stuff, and I could probably say a front and rear would cost you $250 if you bought it from him.
I have a question for you... does the GXE come stock with a single din, or is it a din and a half?
I have a few head units around for under $150, if you are interested....

the stock tape player is single din. underneath it is that cupholder/tray thing in the second din position. i'm buying another single din unit and placing beneath it the cupholder/coin tray from the saab 9000/ford taurus.
i'd love to rig the coin holder part of it to hold cds w/o cases, but i can't think of a practical way to implement that.

PSP ehhh. I use to sell at best buy.
Anyways, James92Se has 6.5 speaker pods for sale for $35 (check the F/S forums). With these I don't think you have to do any cutting. I would probably try to pick up some 6.5 for the fronts if I were you.
Performance Service Plan
Best Buy offers PSP on products to serve as an extended warrenty. I've got one on my cell phone and I've had 7 cell phones in the last 4 years and I've paid probably a total of $250 for all of them. But I also have the hook up.
