Amp or Alternator?
Amp or Alternator?
I kept rewiring my subs becase I thought the amnp couldn't handle it. For some reason the amp keeps going into protectin mode. I don't know if its something internallt wrong with the amp or the alternator (a stereo shop suggested it might be the alternator). The funny thing is, everytime the amp shuts off, if i punch the gas and accelerate, it will turn back on. What do you guys think the problem is? Please help. Is there any tests I can do to decide what the problem is? Thanx
I have a Kenwood KAC-729s 600 watt amp
8 gauge wire
2 12" pioneer IMPP 600 Watt subs

It's probably your alternator if you have to rev. Pop the hood, start the car, and use a voltmeter to see how many volts the alternator is putting out. Just touch the meter's probes to the battery terminals. It should be around 14.4 volts with a good alternator.

It could also be a loose wire that is dropping the voltage at the amp. When you rev the engine the amperage output of the alt goes up supplying the extra voltage the amp needs. Aside from checking the power wireing going to the amp check the alternator wireing. It could also be the regulator but they are internal in modern cars. Did you ever check the alt recall list to see if your vin was affected?
I would also upgrade the power wire to 4 gauge if that amp is powering subs.

Did you check your amp ground? Is it less than 2 feet long and at least as large a guage as the positive wire?

Im having the same problem, Im running two amps (Xplod 800 for the doors, alpine 700 for the sub), 4- gauge to the battery from a bridge that splits to 8 guage for each amp and i am getting the same symptoms. i think i need a capacitor or better alternator myself but i am also running less than 2 feet of ground for each amp...you think that might be the problem??? Other wise i've checked everything else and called some audio stores and they dont really know what to make of it.
