radar detector?

Im thinking of purchesing a radar detector since it might save me from some tickets, but i would like to know from people who have used one before if they are realy what they claim to be, does it actually show u when theres a cop near by.

And what would be the best one (for LA, if they are maybe using diff radars or sumtin)

Thanx

The best ones out there are the Valentine 1 and the Passport 8500. V1 is about $400 and the passport is $300. NOTE: they can save you some tickets if you drive smart. Good Luck!

You have to know how to use them. Also, those that he just listed will have all the updates. In LA, I am sure they are very up to date with their lasers. They dont' even use radar anymore.

you can also check out the whistler 1793 or the 1783. about $150-180 for each if you are on a budget but want quality. yeah the valentine 1 is good but has its down lows as does everything else (ierice). you check out other detectors on www.radar-detectors.com. they have some pretty good reviews about em. good luck with whatevers.

My BEL980 is awesome, they now have a newer one the 985. A detector is simply a tool to help you avoid tickets. The other tools to use are your eyes, common sense and other cars to get radared first. Kinda dangerous to jam along alone on the highway. Cops can use instant-on radar and if they do, all your detector will do is tell you when you're getting a ticket. Like I said, just a tool to help avoid citations, don't rely on it alone. I never drive without my detector in place...BTW I am in northern Cal and I have yet to detect laser, the CHP uses KA.

I got a whistler detector for 20 bucks on a radar detector sale at buy.com I haven't gotten a ticket yet! I don't think that you need to dish out 400 dollars for some souped up detector. I got one that tells me when radar is nearby so I know when to let go of the gas. By the time the cop is near, my MPH is already in the legal zone. Just don't speed excessively and drive smart.

No disrespect to anyone with cheap RD's, but you get what you pay for here.

If you think a $50 detector will keep you from getting a ticket, that's cool. I'll give you my brother's phone number. He's a Statefarm agent and he'll get rich off you for sure.

Seriously, you get what you pay for. Why do you want to skimp? If you don't have the money to get a good detector, you certainly don't have the money to pay for increased insurance when you get a speeding ticket.

There are 3 top dogs detectors: #1= V1, #2= Passport 8500, #3 Bel 980 series.

I've used mine for over 2 years, no tickets yet. (knock on wood) And good radar detector or not, when the cop decides to turn the gun on at you when you whiz right by em, it makes no difference at all. And I make occasional long trips from school to back which is a 400 mile drive. Lots of cops, the radar does it's job, just don't speed excessively, what's the point? Lower gas mileage and the risk of a ticket. It's just not worth it to be speedracer.

the passport 8500 is def. the way to go. but you have to still keep careful watch. i was driving one evening and not paying attention, then suddenly a stupid pig pulled up behind me with his lights off, paced me for a mile and then gave me a nice fat ticket.

Detectors (quality ones) can save you a ticket in many situations, but not all. It depends on how the police use their radar guns in the area where you drive. Local police, with older units that need to be on all the time are easy to spot in enough time to slow down. Cops with new instant on-type units can nail you before your unit ever goes off.
I use a Bel 950, but do not and would not it to speed on purpose ( except if going to Vegas from LA, maybe). An if the cop is using a laser, your DOA, no matter what kind of detector you are using. I have only been hit with a laser twice in 3 years though, and only in Oregon, not California. Luckily, I was not speeding.

I basically use my detector to let me know when I am speeding accidentally when cops are around, especially when I am really tired and not paying full attention to my speed. It can also help you to make full stop at signs, fasten all seatbelts, put that beer away, etc. when the detector goes off.

And it's a blast when someone flys by you when the alarm is sounding. You get to watch all the fun.

i got the pasport 8500

i love it, picks up cops about 1 mile ahead in the city, ( valley, WLA, SIMI)

on the highway about 1.5-2 miles (101, 405, 118)

on PCH about 1.5-2 mile range

if you go on long straight freeways such as 5 and 15 it will give you about 2 mile warning.

good investment , alot of cops out here , insurence rates will f*cking kill you
