please read -> need a problem solver!

Ok yesterday i went to get a carwash (iono if this matters..it shuldnt) and about 20 mins later my subs stop working so i pull over and initially check the fuse under my hood, its blown. I put a ne wfuse in and start going home and i notice that it is working but not as good as it was before, when i get home i get out and look in the trunk, my right sub speaker wire is sort of hanging out and there is a lil black mark above it, which i find weird. I connect both speakers back up and turn the car back on and notice only the left sub is hitting...so i try taking the left speaker wires and connect em to the right sub (it doesnt work) i then take the wires taht initially didnt work in the right sub and put them in the left sub, and it works. So now im looking at the possibility at either the sub being completely ****ed up..but i find hard to beleive, or a blown channel on the amp (1500 watt 501s rockford fosgate, 2 15's). Im completely speechless and clueless, i actually have an amp coming back in tuesday so im anxious to connect that to see if it powers both subs, then i should be able to eliminate the problem very quickly, let me kno wut u guys think please.

With the burn marks you report, I'm betting you nuked that sub that no longer plays.

You were probably pushing the system right? I'm betting it clipped itself to death.

Let's review...You have one set of speaker wires off your amp that you know work and one set that may or may not have a problem. You also have one sub that is good and one that might be fubar'd. So you tried connecting the good wires to the bad sub and it didn't work.

I would have to say, check the sub. Did you smell anything burning. If so, it was your voice coils. If not, you might have snapped a tinsel lead.

If he snapped a tinsel lead, there would not be the burn marks on the connection outside the box. And, every now and then, the tinsel would touch and you'd hear a crackle or two.

As for checking for smell, often, burns occur without a smell being present, so don't go on that alone. But if you do smell something, you've probably burnt quite a bit.

If you want to prevent this from happening again, decrease the gains on the amp, or get a bigger amp or run more amps.

You've never broken a tinsel lead. Unless the sub is using a beefier wire than tinsel it does what you describe. Tinsel comes apart and the speaker does nothing. As for the burn mark I really can't comment without looking inside the box.

It is also possible to do this kind of damage without clipping.

check to make sure the tinsel is still making a connection with the terminal. it could have melted and disconnected. just resolder it if thats the problem.

more than likely, the amplifier has nothing to do with the problem. i would bet that the wire going to the sub got loose and when it touched the basket or magnet it created a spark which in turn caused the black mark that you see... im betting that the sub is fried
