Upgrade 5th Gen Free Air Sub

I'm looking for upgrade options for the Bose free air 8" sub on my rear deck. I'm not sure what sizes will fit. I do not plan to build/use an enclosure. Has anyone had experience with this who can recommend a good sub for me? I was considering a Vifa M21 with a Qts. around .66. I'm also interested to know how big I can go, 10"? 12"? Thanks!

i was REALLY considering that jl w7 8".....but would that sound good free air??? has anyone done that??? oh and i dont think a 10 or 12 would be good, you'll have to cut out metal and prob make the back stronger cause of all the weight, i you may have to do that anyways for teh JL 8"...

not too many choices for a free air- most likely the JL is your best bet

the W7 won't sound right...b/c it is built for an enclosure....only option from JL is the 8IB4 which is pretty hard to find....

Can you wire a aftermarket sub to the stock bose amp? A friend of mine told me Kicker makes a sub that should work well in free air applications.

yeah kicker has a few applications that will work w/ the stock bose amp, but i recommend going aftermarket, b/c you'll get more power to the sub...

My bose sub is blown and I need a replacement. He said this sub will work better than the Bose driver and I dont need a amp.

He mentioned it wasnt designed as a free air sub, but the specs of it should make it perform well in a free air application.

Yes , but what about installing a good set of 6.9 speakers in that deck and adding a box with subs in the rear?

i done that on my old 2000 max gle didnt work out to good on top of a very bad install. they put in the 6x9s crooked it couldnt fit in there str8 cause of the seat belt box retractors and they put the speakers on top of the carpet making them stick up and look all ugly even if they did a good job installing them it probly still wouldnt look good. u better off with componets in all four doors and if thats not enough then try an other set and make them flush with the carpet so that the grills are level with the carpet. Im thinking if u put a woofer on the rear deck u will get a lot of rattling like i did with just my 6x9s...and then the 6x9s over powered the door speakers in sound, i had to turn down the gian on that amp pushing it so i could hear the fronts to get that all around even sound effect.
