Will a bigger box make a sub hit harder?

My friend got a 12" sub and its in a box which looks to be about 2.5 cubic feet. I said it was in a big box, and replied that makes it hit harder. I'm not sure but I don't think it ould make it hit harder. People on here were telling me to run my sub that runs 300RMS in a small sealed box, that is why I don't believe my friend. Could someone clear this up for me please? Thanks.

a bigger box doesn't make it harder, maybe allow it to hit deeper. but not harder. You want something that will hit harder, a vented designed to the your subs recommended specs will do it. It's all in how the sub reacts to the box. I've gone through 3 different boxes in my truck. The first was a small truck box, and it gave great mid range bass, hardly any deep. Next i put 2 bigger sealed boxes, great overall, low bass was more noticable. Right now I have a vented. Great pressure at low bass, and I hardly notice any of the mid range.

putting a low RMS sub in a small sealed box will let you give it much more than the rated RMS without having to worry.

Just felt like adding it.

If the box he had was bigger than the spec ported box for the sub, it probably was hitting deeper, but the sub WASNT hitting as hard because there wasnt enough pressure building up in the box.

Proper box design is much more important in ported enclosures than in sealed.

I'll just assume his is ported.

look at teh spec sheet your subs came with. if you follow the one that has the highest db example, if the charts show sealed, then sealed would be hit the hardest. but like kcidmil said, USUALLY all subs an generate lower frequencies in ported boxes (higher volume) which MAY seem like they are hitting harder but really it is just lower bass. also you will have to consider tuning your amp to "hit harder" vibration like. or hit lower (DEEEEEP BASS) so it comes down to what kind of sound you like, that kind of box will seem to hit harder to you.
