headunit installation

Whats a good website which shows how to install a head unit? I know how to take apart the dash, i'm looking more at the wiring part. What's the purpose of the harness? What things to watch out for?

the harness saves you from having to connect about 20 wires separately. and look out for the screws that hold the stock HU into their brackets...those things are a b*tch to remove.

so if i buy a harness, I don't have to cut any wires? Just connect the harness from the stock wires to the back of the headunit? How does it work?

you splice the wires on the harness to the wires on the new head unit. Then you just plug the new harness into you're car. walmart has them cheapest.

harnesses are head unit specific, and they plug into the back of the thing, its also called a power connector i believe.you just splice the correpsonding wires that are coming from your car into the wires connected to the harness, then plug harness into stereo, you should be able to do it no problem.

No, that's not the best way to do it. That way involves cutting the factory wiring harnesses off, which is not a good idea.

The harness you are talking about is the harness that comes with the head unit.

But you still need to buy an adapter harness that gets spliced into the HU harness and then plugs into the factory harness. The aftermarket adapter harnesses are labeled, so it is easy to match the wires up to the HU harness. The car's wiring isn't labeled, so it's best to have an adapter that's already configured for the car's wiring, so it's a no-brainer.
