Any opinions on Bazookas?

Hi All,

I'm thinking about adding a subwoofer. I am happy with the sound and DB levels with my headunit (Xplod CDXM730) and speakers, once I found the LPF, now they don't distort because the extreme lows are cuttof. I was thinking of adding a self powered bazooka, mainly because it would be easy to install (I could do it myself) all I would need to do is run RCA's from the subwoofer output on the headunit. A bazooka is also small an gives you many install options. I realize also that a bazooka is a pioneering product and may be obsolete by today's standards.... Not sure what they sound like and how powerful they are, but I mostly listen to orchestral/classical, jazz and some pop, but not definitely gonna be listnig to Nelly all day long (not that there is anything wrong with that )

Bazooka for "orchestral/classical"??? Funny
Don't waste your money... Anyway you have to run RCAs and B+ cords... Might as well get a good amp and a good sub. If you don't need a lot of bass, get one 10" or 12" with a matching amp. Sounds to me that you wanna get some SQ... On my own experience, I know that if you wanna save on the sound, you will waste much more. The reason? You are not going to like the sound, throw you "goodies" out and go buy a new nice setup That's how it works. Remember, you get what you pay for. Get 1 Shiva ($125), nice 200-300W amp, a box, and you will really apreciate the sound over Bazooka... even though it's gonna be 100-200 more expensive...

Thanks krasavchic. So, I take it you know bazookas... what's wrong with them? not enough power? too expensive?
I do want SQ , one of the reasons I want to do it myself. I don't want anyone messing with polarity, channel balance, etc. As a former home audiophile (Krell, B&W, Meridian) I do appreciate SQ. I'm just not familiar with tearing my car appart for it, although I did install my new 6.5 speakers thanks to you guys at Maxima.org. are there HOW TO instructions on running wires in the maxima? that's what's keeping me from doing the complicated install.

I can't believe that you even thought of Bazookas...

I never bought Bazookas for myself, I just heard them... They mostly made for 15 y.o. punks (no offense to anyone), who needs a lot of booms and don't even care about the HIs and MIDs... "what's wrong with them? not enough power?" That's the whole point They have a lot of power... Seems to me that this is the only thing Bazooka is concentrated on There's no SQ at all though...

In your case, it's gonna be the easiest thing to hook such a system up.
B+ goes to the battery, RCAs go to the back of the HU. Try not to mix them together, when you lead them to the trunk, or you might hear the annoying sound of the amp I guess everybody knows what I mean. Almost on every Maxima, there's a whole in the firewall on the driver's side. Get the wires though that whole and you might run them under the plastic panels (whatever they are called... located on the floor right near the doors). Then get them behind the back seat, and the wires are in the trunk. It's very hard to mess up with the polarity. Red to the positive (+), black to the negative (-). Connect RCA to the low input on the amp. Red, power cable will go to B+ terminal on the amp. Ground can be very easily found in the trunk. I have no idea whether or not you have an amp in your trunk right now... but if you do, get the remote from there... If not, you will have to run it from the HU as well. Remote goes to the amp. Then you just connect amp's outs to the sub's ins... that's all. If you do it first time, it might take you some three hours, just don't be in a rush...

Be very carefull with the choice of the box for the woofer!

you can't go wrong with B&W, even their $300 a pair speakers have very open midrange and clean holographic imaging. You do need good amps however, as they will sound only as good as the stuff they are hooked with. The price seems fine. Iv'e own 3 diffrent pairs on their upper echelon line, the Matrix 801, 805's and the Nautilus 805s. They make really good drivers. I wonder if anyone's ever been crazy enough to put these drivers in a car setup....

well, I heeded the advice.
Got a MB quart PWD 254 10' woofer, a Boschman 2 channel mosfet 200 W amp and a ported MDF box. Tomorrow will have it porfessionaly installed. I know the amp is cheapo, but I think the woofer is good. 10" should be ok for "classical/orchestral" stuff, right? Ok, so maybe i wanna cruise with Usher to impress my geeky-musician colleagues once, but just once!
If I have to hear Usher being played on some car with big 12"s AGAIN i'm gonna puke!

Good sub, don't really like the amp though... It's always better get a matching amp (meaning the power) and not to put too much bass. What happens with "small" amps is that people put the bass on full, feel it's not enough, and put too much bass gain as well... that's how subs get blown. From what I know this happens more often than people blowing their subs with more powerfull amp (more powerfull than the sub itself). The reason is that gain provides much more noise. I agree, don't expect it to be too loud, but I am pretty sure it's gonna be just enough for what you listen to. Enjoy and congrats with the first setup!!!

you will work it to hard if you bridge it and will get real hot. if you do don't bridge it as much as you want.

remember that 2 15" inch set up up I had with the 300w amp. well I lost that amp do to heat and didn't work right after awile.

Hey Krasavchic,
The MB Quart woofer is dual voicecoil... has 2 sets of connectors; should i run the amp "unbridged" and just hook up each voice coil separately , eg: left+right? would that keep the amp more efficient?

bazooka are worthless POS subs. they are great for that kid who just wants bass but if your truly looking for nice SQ bass then keep researching. that shiva would sound great. or even a Type R' from alpine in a sealed box would do the trick(ive got 2)
