Can anyone explain the differences in sound quality by aiming the sub either forward (to cabin), backward, up or down?

 

well from what i have noticed, when you face the subs towards the rear of the car and put them as far toward the front of the car as you can, the trunk acts like a resonance chamber for the better boom.

 

generally...

aimed to the front = tighter bass
aimed to the rear = boomier

 

how about if I aimed the speakers towards the back seats... pretty close to the seats... and ported the box through the back deck (i.e. cutting some holes in the deck.)

 

do you really want to cut holes in your seats though?

I'm trying to get tighter, better quality bass. The deck and most of the trunk was recently dynamatted. it made the 6.5 mids sound much, much better, but now I can't hear the THUMP and all I hear is the BOOM from the sub. It annoys me to no end.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

 

I've been researching on that because since i re-did my trunk with the subs facing back but with the box righ against the back seat, i felt like i lost power compared to the subs facing back but closer to the trunk lid, so i tried facing them forward but aparently the soundwaves cancelled and i lost any deep bass although the higher tighter bass sounded better. I read on another site though that if you face your subs forward and seal off the front of the subs from the airspace in the trunk, the subs will sound good, and this makes sense to me which is why i'm gonna try it out. I'll post the results later

yea if you fire forward you're supposed to seal off the trunk

 

well, I mounted my subs facing forward but they didn't sound as good as i expected, it may be that i didn't do such a good job of sealing the trunk from the front of the car, if you look at the last picture, you can see from the back, how there are still little holes all over, the only thing i did was to place the box close to the seat, and the use a gap filler to fill the gaps and try to seal it off. I'll probably try it again in the weekend when i have more time. The good thing about this setup though is that you can hardly hear any rattles outside the car.

Can any1 help me... i gunna install 1200w mtx box in my trunk. i got a 2000 maxima with bose. i want to dynomat my trunk because i hate the rattle but will u be able to hear heavy bass from the outside? and at what wattage will i have to change my rear windsheild??????

 

Mine looked real close to your, Isac. except I only had a single sub aimed at the trunk access hole. It didn't sound very good.
On a related note... Is your box sealed or ported? And how deep is it? I like the abundance of trunk space.

 

1200 watt mtx box? how much rms is the amp pushing? if it is at a real high wattage youll def. feel the bass outside the trunk. i notice i get the bestestest bass is when i face the sub towards the trunk and open it like quarter way for a little hole, and dam that **** shakes the floor!

 

yea i got it all installed i didnt by the dynomat becasue when i herd my system playin only my liscense plate was shaking..long story short my bass was only almost up half way when i put it all the way upp it rattles a little . My question is that if i instal dynomat will it only prevent the rattle ing but still keep the same boom? i got 2 12" Kenwoods 1200w wita rockford fosgate 1500w amp

Bass waves are long.

If rear fired they will "sound" better inside the car, which is what most ppl want due to the simple reason that they are ususally inside the car
By the time the soundwaves reaches the rear of your trunk, and boucnes back forward its traveled 4-5ft longer then a front fire setup would and this gives it more room to be more timed in with your front stage, ect...

Downsides to rear fire...dreaded amount of rattling.

Front fire, you want SPL...fire it to the front, you want less rattles, fire it to the front. Tighter bass... not exactly, your not hearing all the bass. Your damn well feeling it! but the soundwaves meet about...4-5ft in front of your car. So its gonna sound pretty damn good about 4-5ft in front of your car, but since your not gonna be slamming your system while standing in front of your car...not exaclty the best bet for SQ.

 

has anyone experimented with upfiring? I know from experience that upfiring in SUV's takes out a lot of rattles and sounds really good. If you have the bose and remove the sub but keep the factory grill in place you have a direct vent into the cabin. Just an idea to try....

 

i tried up firing, and it sucks, i was driving when the sub fell back, and it was facing up. you could DEFINETELY FEEL the drop of bass upfired, well that was my experience. QUES: so if i want to feel the bass outside of the car face it to the front? lol i like to show off
