Using a 2ch amp to power a sub

Some 2ch amps say they can be used as a mono and it seems like they are rather less expensive than a mono amp. Is it a bad idea to use a 2ch amp to power a sub? How do you figure out the RMS power that is needed when using a 2ch amp as a mono?

I'm also looking at this amp to power some CDT components I think I'll be getting. Is that a decent amp?

If I did end up with a mono, how's this one.

Keep in mind with all this that I don't want to spend a fortune, but that I also don't need the best of the best.

Thanks for your help.

just put each channels rms power to get what it will give to the sub. there is nothing wrong with using a 2 channel amp on a sub. id look at a kicker kx150.2 to power some cdts comps. it runs mine and i love em.

You mean just add them together? That makes sense. I just saw something on an audio forum (http://www.caraudioforum.com/vbb3/sh...d.php?t=207515) that said different. Maybe it was a typo.

So how about getting 2 of those 2ch hifonics amps...one for the comps and one for the sub. BTW this is going to be a small sub as I don't want trunk thumping bass...just a little punch.

well each company can rate their products any way they want. but if you have an amp that puts out 125x2@2 ohms lets say... then the rough estimate is 250 watts. im sure the amps are fine... especially when bought from thezeb.com.

if your subs have DVC, then you can just run one channel to each voil coil.

which set of cdt components are going to get? i am trying to sell mine right now its a cdt-ef61's they are in perfect shape except for one of the connectors are broken for one of the crossovers, they are replaceable since it just clips on to the x-over. let me know if you are interested they go for $200 plus shippin

Act like I'm a noob please. What is DVC? I take it that certain subs can't be run off a 2ch and some can? Are the subs that can't be run off a mono?

I was going to get the cl-61's for $150 from thezeb, but I emailed somebody who posted here and he will sell some ef-61cv's and cl-6x's for the rear for $195 shipped. He's a dealer and they will be brand new with a warrenty. He doesn't have too many posts here, but he had a number of references on another forum so I'm pretty confident he's not a scammer. Thanks for the offer though.

dvc means dual voice coils. this would either make your sub play in series or parallel. lets say you have a dual 2ohv sub or a 2hm dvc sub it would work like this
wired in paralel is 4ohms
WIred in series is 1ohm. got it?

if you want 2ohms you would need a 4ohm dvc
so paralel would be 8ohms and series would be 2ohms got it?

Ok I see. A DVC sub is not necessary to use it with a 2ch amp though then correct?

well if you use a svc sub you just bridge the amp so it's in monoblock anyway...that's what i'm doing with TWO DVC subs. that amp should be fine for the cdt's, i kinda wish i didn't get my avionixx 4ch and just got a nice 150x2 amp and run my rears (cl-6x) off the h/u. i heard the cdt's really shine with more than 100w
