How do you use t-taps properly?

As some might know, I plan on hooking up my cd changer tomarrow, so I went out and bought some t-taps, since I seen it used on my explorer when I pulled out the cd changer from that car. I know the basic idea of t-taps, like they splice into existing wire to add an extension to attach another wire, but my question is, what's the best way to cut the wire enough before attaching the t-tap into the wire? Should the t-tap cut into the wire itself? Or should I take my scissor and cut alittle into the wire and then add the t-tap? Thanks .
