H/U install kit

I want to yank out my stock h/u (single-din cassette).
Underneath the h/u I have an open pocket and under that pocket I have the pocket w/ the flap.
I've been looking over some diagrams on the forum regarding h/u installs and need to know the following:
1. Do I still need an install kit? B/c based on the way the stock h/u is in the dash it seems I can just screw my h/u in its place... If so, is the Crutchfield/Scosche kit the "best?"
2. Regardless of whether I do or don't use an install kit, do I still get to keep my open pocket under the h/u and the "closable" one underneath the open one? I really like/need both of thsoe and, well, I want them...
Anyway, thanks for the input in advance, I really apreciate it!

I guess no one has an aftermarket h/u in their car?
Most h/u mount in a similar way - so of the people that replaced their h/u, did any of you use a mounting kit such as this one (click to see kit) or any other brand...?
I know it's only $20, but if I don't have to pay it that'd be even better.
Thanks for you help in advance!
