The most effective way to avoid tickets is not to break the speed limit.

...and not to street race your friend's TSX

I used one until it got stolen about 18 months ago.

Within 2 months I got 2 speeding tickets. Now I just slow down.

don't use a radar detector as an excuse to speed. that being said, i'm using an escort 8500.

Escort here too... Been using it for a year and a half with no tickets. I don't drive crazy but I do speed when I go on longer trips. Very useful on highway and not so much in cities. I'd recomend spending $$$ on it. The way I see it, if you spend $300 and it saves you just one ticket, it has paid for itself.

it won't go off if they got their radars off. that's why i keep stressing to people you can't depend on the detectors 100%.

heck no...i got mine just before driving back up to school. i have a 4 hour drive up FL's turnpike and i drove it at night (so i can watch movies easier ) and there was a cop just sitting on the side of the road with no lights facing the direction of traffic. i was with a pack fo cars going about 12 over the limit then once we go past him he pulls into traffic, i thought for sure i was a dead man. anyway the radar did not go off, so do not use it as a false sense of security at all!

^^ perfect example!

exit10: that radar most likely don't have the same range, features, etc etc as some of the more expensive models.

I did a post a few weeks ago about radar and laser, and the differences between the two. Laser is not on constantly, and is used a portable hand held device, vice radar, which is hard wired to the patrol vehicle, and usually always on. Most patrolman who are set up in a speed trap, will opt to use laser, for the simple fact that it wont trigger a radar detector until it is too late. Do yourself a favor and stay within the speed limit, and you wont have any problems.

Rich, no offense, your radar wouldnt compare to an 8500 or V1 by a long shot. Come on.

That being said, radar detectors are only as good as the person operating them.

When you hardwire a Radar Detector can you wire it to the maplight or that's not a good enough source?

I have the EXACT same one. I bought it from ebay a while ago for $25 shipped. They only time it helps is at night driving in the suburbs where there are not street/highway lights. It would go off and two seconds later, I would see a cop on the side of the road thats really dark.. so yeah, it "helps" but if you're in the city, you're better off without it since it goes off every other second.

i got the escort solo and it works great for me, i do mostly city driving and it tracks down cops from about a good 4-5 blocks away! no complaints on the escort! my cousin has a cobra detector and his is awesome- it picks up the cop's radar from about 7-8 blocks away in city driving- both work very well on the highway! passport is another great radar detector you may want to consider as well! good luck

Good grief. How many times is this question gonna be asked?

There are several LOOOOONNNNNGGGGG threads here already discussing everything about RD's. Research a little.

This thread is proof positive some of you need to read those threads sure enough. Urban legends and heresay is everywhere. Some of you have got to be kidding, right?
