Well, I know you said you don't want to take up trunk space, but...
Like a couple of others on here, I just built a tray to go under my carpet. Still have the spare tire accessible, and the amps are not visible from the trunk. I did not lose any area in the trunk, but I did lose about 4" of height. Anyway, its basically just two sheets of plywood, with a thicker one on top for more cargo support (the trunk is still usable). Then you can use some vertical bracing on the bottom (thinner) piece to support the top piece. You can space the bracing however you need it to fit a large amp. Right now, my tray is holding my ARC 4-channel, 2 Rainbow crossovers, and 2 distribution blocks. It's a little messy, but I haven't had time to clean up the wiring in the center passage yet. In the summer, I'll be throwing a sub amp on the right side, and moving that brace over. So it's a pretty flexible design. Here ya go:
Bottom tray with bracing:
Top tray lays on top of bracing (will probably fasten somehow in the future):
Carpet lays on top of top tray:
As you can see, it doesn't sit too high:
From inside the car:

@ Big Du...
Love what you did with your trunk, bro. I'll have to copy your idea, though...
Do you have something to prop up the false floor when you need to get to the spare?
Also, do you have the floor padded at the contact points where the floor makes contact with the metal parts of the trunk? I figure you'll need it in the event you add a sub to your system to prevent rattling. I built a "floor" in my 3rd Gen, but didn't think to do it the way you did. I like your idea MUCH better! Thanks for sharing

I should actually note that I got my idea from WildmanAL and studman.
Let me know if you have any questions.

I HAD mine on the back of the back seats. The screws just ripped out so I'm thinking of making a template of the opening and cutting a piece of MDF then mount the amps to it. Have to see what Don has in mind when I go see him this weekend.
