question on matching up a sub and an amp

Im purchasing a jl 10w3v2-d4 sub and it says that its continueous handleing power is 300watts. Now the specs also say that its a dual 2,4, or 6 ohm sub. What do the ohm's mean? If i get an amp that has 350 RMS will this be right? The amp specs for the alpine MRD-m301 are that it runs:
350W x 1 RMS (2ohm;@14.4V 1% THD+N) • 250W x 1 RMS (2ohm;@12V 1% THD+N) • 150W x 1 RMS (4ohm;@12V 1% THD+N)
Now how much will the sub be running on? 350? 250? or 150w? Would this be the right amp to run for this sub? or should i get a stronger one? and how do i know how many ohms it will run on.
Ive read some things on ohms but am still unclear. Could someone please take the time to answer all my questions. Im a newb at car audio. Thank you

That's the electrical resistance of the voice coil. The JL you mention has dual voice coils which is actually two sets of wires wrapped around the voice coil former. Here's a picture - link. The signal from your amp flows through these coils of wire and turn them into an electromagnet (just like you learned in Physics 101). This electromagnet interacts with the stationary magnet on the back of the sub. Very quickly, it either pushes the cone out or pulls it back in. This movement of the cone produces the sound you hear.

That means you are getting a sub with dual 4 ohm coils.

If you connect the voice coils in parallel, and your electrical system can supply a constant 14.4 volts, then you will get 350 watts. If your electrical system drops down to 12 volts, your amp will only put out 250 watts.

It depends on the box you are putting it in. It seems that most people here want to slap the biggest amp they possibly can into the system. Depending on the enclosure, it may only take 150 watts to get the maximum out of your sub. That's why they have modeling programs like WinISD and Unibox.

Are those the external dimensions? What is the thickness of the panels? You need to be concerned with the interior volume of the enclosure.

The car supplies ~12.5 volts with the engine off, and ~14 volts with the engine on (the voltage is RPM-dependent when the engine is on).

+1, robert awesome reply.

imo yes youre good with that amp, itll be fine

Unless you get some type of voltage display on your battery terminal or an external one, you wont know what voltage you are at. Most of the time you should be somewhere in between 12 and 14.4. Theres more important things for you to worry about until you get serious about audio though.

Yes the interior volume of the box is what matters, but its a 10W3 its not going to be the end of the world to that sub IMO. Youll be fine with your setup, just hook it up and tell us how it sounds already.
