Stock stereo with amp, or new system?

Need some help from the guys on the forum that know the info - I know **** about car stereos. Have about $1k to burn (random small work bonus), and am wondering if it's worth installing new sound in the max. I did some research a while back, and came up with about $1,200 for a new system, and new M&M speakers all around. But the problem is, I'm not much of an audiophile, and may not be able to tell the diff in really good sound, especially in a loud car like the max. Also, don't really listen to loud music. So, can you guys help me out with opinion on these three options:

1. Add an amp to the stock system (non-Bose), keep system and stock speakers. Better sound, or not worth it?

2. Add a new system, without amp or new speakers. Better? Recommendations? (want something subdued, less flashing lights the better... )

3. Not worth doing either of these, new speakers and system required for an improvement in sound. Again, not looking for the best - looking for significantly better.

Thanks!!

Ok if you're not looking for good SQ, and something that isn't loud... here's my suggestion.

Memphis Component 6.5"
Memphis 6x9 Co-axials
Memphis 50Wx4 PR series

Now if you want to add a sub for some low end bass, I would recommend this

Memphis Belle 600 watt
Memphis M-Class 10"

and get Clarion speakers all the way around... Clarion had a lot better highs than Memphis did...

But if you don't want a sub... Memphis has awesome mids... and the component highs were great.

Add an new head unit - $200-$300
Add new 6.5" components - $200
Add new 6.5" rear door speakers - $75
Add new amp for the components 150w-200w depending on components(check ebay) - $100
Amp wiring kit (check ebay) - $20

If you get the HU and speakers from crutchfield.com you will receive all the items necessary to install it yourself and save money there too. This is a decent system for around $600-$700. If you want some rear fill bass, then add an Infinity Basslink for another $250.

Just to clarify, and I'm sure you meant it this way: I'm not looking for BAD sound quality, just don't know that I can tell the diff between good and really good in the car (I can barely tell with our home theater).

Thanks!

I can tell subtle differences between speakers. That's why I suggested either Memphis by itself for the interior. Or Memphis subs with Clarion interior. Clarion has really good highs, and decent mids.

Memphis has awesome mids, and they hit so well you can almost go without a sub. And the components allow for decent highs as well.

I upgraded my non-bose while retaining the OEM head unit. Changing out the factory speakers and adding a 4 channel amplifier would be a great way to get started in improving the sound quality of your car. You didnt' mention much about adding extra low-end, so I didn't suggest adding any subs. See my site for ideas.
