hmm..my opinion...

i don't think it's needed unless the suspension is super stiff. but most of the time, it's good to go from the factory since a lot of them test the drivers before they ship them out. i know for my RL-p....breaking in is not required.

I strongly believe in it.

Try this...go outside, run a mile, then go to bed. Stay in bed for a few weeks/months whichever you choose. Now get up (Do Not Stretch) go run another mile. Hows your body feeling?

Now I know noone is gonna do this (maybe jobless Rich ), but you get the point. Yes speakers are tested at their appropriate facilities, but then they sit for a bit on a shelf,in a truck, etc. When new the suspension is usually somewhat stiff regardless, but since you didnt built it do you know exactly how stiff/loose it actually should be? Can an individual actually say "feels 'right' to me!"?

All in all, its definately Not going to harm a speaker using a 'break-in' time.

subscribing

from a VERY simple POV...using something lightly helps to loosen it up, like the rubber surround, or in don's case, your muscles. otherwise theyre stiff and "cold" and can crack/break/fail just a bit easier

just my 0.02

Strongly believe in it. I kept 2 RF punch z subs in prime condition for over 3 years. There were people in town that couldn't keep them for 4 months without blowing them. And they were running less power than I was. talk about some morons.

my old RFs...i kept it low volumes for an hour or so. then cranked it up. still works fine when i took them out. i guess even if it doesn't need breaking in...it won't hurt.

i broke in my Type R for about 5 hours or so before i installed it. i ran it at 4 ohms to my house amp, and had the volume low, so i wouldnt worry about the amp overheating.[it was running at 8ohms] then i left it and did my chores, or whatever had to be done during that time period

then i installed it in the car and started thumpin away

The usual guideline is for low volumes for 20 hours. When I called Alpine he told me to play it at half volume for a month. So I got my voltmeter out and set the gains so its not getting more than 250W RMS. It's an Alpine Type R BTW.

what about , besides a initial break in, but in the morning when you 1st get in the car, do yall crank the car and pound away, or let it warm up for a min, mabey im thinking like a motor. mabey this would be important if it was cold ???

i got a alpine type r, i even got it used, and its great. if i ever buy something new its prob gonna be type x

My thought on it is simple: Breaking in the sub can't hurt - and might even be good for the sub. Not breaking in the sub might hurt it, and worst of all you have to wonder if your system is as good as it would be if you had broken it in.

If it's really cold (winter) then you shouldn't really pound it until the car gets warm (inside). The surround is rubber, and rubber will get stiffer/harder making it easier to damage the subwoofer. That's what I'm assuming.

Like a lot of people have said, breaking in a new sub certainly can't hurt it. Some manufacturers say that their subs (or midwoofers) produce more volume after they've been broken in. Dynaudio specifically made this claim in the literature they packed with my 8" midwoofers.

As far as "warming" my subs up...never done it. I can certainly hear the difference after I've played them for a while - especially on cold days. But in all the subs I've EVER owned I've never had one go bad for any reason. I treat them well and never over drive them, but I'm certainly not patient enough to let them "warm up" for a bit before I crank them every time I get in my car.

I do it cause manufacturers recommend it. I simply break in with soft music, slowly turning it louder over the course of hours. I have to be honest and say that I am unsure if I've actually heard a difference. Right when I think I do, I change my mind, decided that it sounds the same and is placebo effect. I donno. But I agree...better safe than sorry. If a speaker manufacturer is recommending it, theres some electrical/mechanical engineer that knows more than I do....I'll listen to them. Can't hurt.

Well I keep my down anyway in the morning. It's such a short drive to work it's not worth cranking them up.

When I go into town is when I start warming them up.

Personally, I think it's unnecessary. However, it's always good to re-iterate that you can't possibly hurt anything by doing it.

i 've made few visits to this high-rnd audio shop. the kind of store that sells loudspeakers at prices ranging from 1000.00-15000.00. anyway, while visiting one day, i noticed and heard them breaking in a pair of Vandersteen Audio speakers using a test cd containing sweeping low freq. test tones. if that helps any?

It's quite possible that they were not necessarily breaking in the speakers, but rather testing it for frequency response, or possibly just admiring its performance using a standard tone CD. After all it must be a high quality speaker with such a high price tag. Did they say they were breaking it in?

...Just playing devil's advocate, in this scenario

you didn't read my post carefully enough. i said that's what they were doing. and you don't test a speaker's response using a SWEPT freq. tone.

yeah...considering the price tag, i can see why any precautions were taken ...besides the fact that many manufacturers do recommend a break in period.

1st off I HAVE a job. 2nd off..break in is nice but not essential. MOST if not all manufacturers test the sub and break it in unless otherwise stated. i think ID and Kicker recommend break in. i beat on my sub since day 1 and its fine but i miss my car and bass.

p.s. NY is AMAZING!!! to any NY orgers ill be in albany 2day and NYC manhatten july 29th for the night. if anyone has any bar/club hookups, or a way to get 3 cheap yankee tix please email me at MJSPTK@AOL.COM. i miss the org guys i feel like i lost all of the little audio knowledge i had. thanks kevin for hooking up my bros stuff. he needs to cover the air holes in thebox. Avi call me i need a ride in NYC next friday. peace for now org!

My fault, I didn't realize that you knew for a fact that thats what they were doing, rather then you assuming that's what they were doing, while just walking by, or something to that effect.
