Aftermarket Navi (Avic D1) Pictures + Howto

Hey guys... Just finished up this little project. I couldn't find a tutorial on the net so I figured this might be of more general interest to those thinking about getting navi in their 5th gens. I took plenty of pictures and have a little bit of a writeup attached as well.

click for thread

As far as I know these are the first pictures of a D1 in a 5th gen. (I couldn't find any others on the board). Enjoy.

Ahh, great question... it's right behind the screen, you hit a button (upper right) and the screen slides out to reveal a cd-rom and dvd-rom drive.

the actual unit was $1086 shipped off of e-bay
misc connectors + harnesses were about $20
the GXE trim kit was $105 shipped...

so figure about $1200 self-installed...

The eclipse avn 5435 can be had for a little bit more (installed professionally).

Simple... I never intend on playing dvd's in the car. I have a nice A/V system at home, why would i watch movies in the car? Besides, it's a little more than $100 additional for an AVN 5435, wheras an external dvd player for the pioneer will run me < $50 on e-bay. (in which case i can have DVD + navi at the same time)

auction

P.S. The eclipse navi is virtually identical to the navi software I had on my pda before. (pretty much plain vanilla Navtech). (I've played with the 5435 at a local dealer). Let's just say that the eclipse navi isn't without it's quirks as well, and i've yet to decide which I like better.

Would you be able to hardwire an iPod it? Also does the screen just show the tyrack #'s and time when a CD is playing? Or does it have any graphics that you can choose from while a cd is playing?

Yes, you can hardwire anything that outputs a regular stereo signal. (There's a bundle of wires with inputs that plugs into the back of the unit). See the manual on pioneers website for specific inputs.. I believe that there is also a special pioneer accessory for ipods that will even give you limited control of the ipod from the touchscreen. (ie. next track, previous track, etc.)

In NAV mode, the screen will display the track in the lower portion of the screen everytime the track changes. In A/V mode there are 2 displays. A full one with the track listing and touch buttons for each track. The other mode is a minimized one which shows only the current track and most of the background. The background can be animated, but it doesn't respond to the music. (For instance, I currently have the pioneer sky background for A/V. It cycles slowly from blue-sunset-blue... nothing radical, but soothing) I believe you can upload your own custom GIF/JPEG backgrounds as well from a cdr. again, no visualization that responds to music, but with a gif it seems that you should be able to have any kind of animation (within some file-size restriction).

Just a couple of quick questions. How are aftermarket navigation units? Are they precise in telling you where to turn? Do you have to pay for anything additional? Sorry for the questions, but i'm thinking about aftermaket nav units now.

I haven't tried the D1 on any longer routes, but it's been perfect aroudn town (rochester, NY). Due to the dead-reckoining (read pioneer's manual), it's extremely precise in telling you when to turn (wheras my previous pda-based unit was always a second or two behind on the tracking).

If you get one of the all-in-one units (avn5435, avic d1, n1, or n2), then you don't need anything else to make them work (other than some basic tools + wiring... see writeup).
