INTERIOR OVERHAUL PROJECT III - +500sqft Second Skin Deadening Worklog Installation!
Ok ladies & gents, it's time to start deadening!!! I am essentially ripping the ENTIRE interior down to bare steel and deadening EVERYTHING. Here is what we have availible, let's see if I can use it all!!!
080 sqft. Second Skin Sludge (2 gallons)
100 sqft. Second Skin Hazmat
120 sqft. Second Skin Spectrum (3 gallons)
240 sqft. Second Skin Damplifier
135 sqft. 19lb. Carpet Padding
I am going to add pics as I can, now on to the pictures!!!

Here is he first wheel well, so it's time to get started! I first did the driver rear side whel well, lo and behold, the well cannot be taken out; instead the ENTIRE surface need be covered. The hazmat was first heated with a heat gun to ensure full adhesion, and lemme tell ya, this stuff ain't comin' off!! Plus we have to snake around the damn gas line, so let's get started!
First, I cleaned off the wheel well with Armor all wheel cleaner, then wiped 'er down with acetone.

Then I did an entire layer of Hazmat throughout the wheel well.

Then it's time for a second layer! I hit up as much as I could since I limited myself to 4 pads of Hazmat for each wheel well, so the second layer covers about 80% of the first layer.

Next, I covered the Hazmat in a high-temperature foil tape.

Next, it's time for some Sluuuuudge. This stuff is thick. REALLY THICK. So thick that you can put a glop sideways, upside down, and it WON'T fall. This stuff rocks. The advantage now is that I can cover everything I missed with the Hazmat.

Finally, after the Sludge cured overnight, I did a final coat of asphalt spray in order to protect my sludge from the elements. Oh, and it's some extra deadening, although I don't knwo how well it'll work.

That's it for now, folks! I am going to finish the console on Monday (hopefully, the Plastic Epoxy seems to be working well) but I will have some more pics up of the other deadening I have been doing then as well!

1. There is a plastic cover you can order to cover the gas lines. I need to call Dave and get one.
2. Are you going to paint the wheel well black after you finish applying the deadener? Krylon flat black would look great as well as stand up to the elements better than the foil outter backing of the deadener. Just a friendly suggestion.

I bought everything from SecondSkinAudio.com. When I was first doing my research on sound deadening material, EVERYONE over on caraudio.com kept pointing me towards these guys claiming that they are the best. Now I know why. Their deadening is top notch in terms of pliability, thickness, adhesion, and weight. To top it all off, their owner, Anthony Covolla, leaves his cell phone # on the webiste so you can call him with ANY questions you may have! I have called him at least a dozen times with various questions and he has ALWAYS been more than happy to oblige. They make a ton of different materials, so you have quite the selection to choose from. They are constantly running specials and group deals so you can get a great discount. I think I spent around $800 fo all my deadening by strategically choosing my purchase times. I know this sounds like a plug, but these guys are just AWESOME. Another thing to consider is that you are buying directly from the manufacturer, so you don't have to deal with middle-man markup costs as opposed to let's say, Dynamat from Crutchfield. Check out the site HERE. You seem quite the connesieur of high-end items...so I think you'll find their products up to your standards.
Lemme know if you have any other questions about their products, they're all superb products!

One layer will do the job of 5 layers of spectrum. You can purchase from their B-Stock (same as A-Stock, but just a slightly different forumla, work just as well, if not better in some cases than A-Stock). Here is a link to their Look for the sludge. You can get 5 gallons for $239 which will AMPLY coat a Maxima. Should come to around $275 when shipping is included, which will give you 200sqft of coverage. I will see what I can do about finding you a group deal on the forums out and about.

be careful spraying down the rear deck. I did that with some liquid foam and didn't even realize that it just fell right through the big open gap under the deck into my trunk on my box and carpet. never came off.

Ok, now time for some goodies...
Here we can see my, uhhmmm...'Deadening pr0n'...heh-heh

Here we see the backsides of my first doorpanel. I have applied 2 layers of Hazmat to each half of the door. Don't worry about why I tore the door in half, you will all see soon enough!

And here is a shot of the backside of the lower half of the driver side dash. I have applied a layer of Hazmat and covered in foil tape. I am going to thenm do a layer of Sludge followed by a final layer of carpet padding. I am going apesh!t on this section since it should block out most of the noise from the firewall.

Here's a shot of that trunk frame thingie, I have no idea what it's called!

And here is just a bonus pic of some of the peices I have been two toning as I go...

Ok, so here is what I did TODAY. I did the entire trunk lid in 4 hours!
So we first start by removing the lid and wiping it down with some mineral spirits to ensure good adhesion. I also filled the top set of holes with some GREAT STUFF just because...well, I could!

Next I reached up and inside the trunk and added an entire layer of Damplifier. It was tough snaking my hand behind there, and DAMN, did I slice my finger good while doing so. Nonetheless, here's how the inside looked...

Next up I added a layer of the entire lid...

...then I taped off the perimiter and added a layer of Sludge. Something interesting that I learned is that the smoother the surface, the easier it is to apply the Sludge. (Big surprise, eh?). This has got me thinking that I may advoate the useage of smaller peices over big ones for the rest of the car.

Finally, here's how she looks mostly cured. Sludge "skins over" afterabout an hour, but most of my areas were very thick, so it is going to take longer. The sun is going down soon, and I need to get this thing back in tonight, so here's how she looks. The cured areas are grey, the wet stuff is the blue.

INITIAL VERDICT: The trunk shuts with a nice reaffirming 'THUNK!' Well, that's it for now, folks! I am likley going to be working on my console tommorow, so enjoy for now!

Holy crap Metal!! And I thought I was meticulous!!!
It's really nice how you're documenting this as you go...I really appreciate your efforts.
Have you taken sound measurements of your car at various speeds so you can compare the road noise before and after?
Tony

Thanks for the support, everyone! I think I am going to do either a wheel well or the trunk tommorow...I will likley be doing most of the trunk, seeing as how the weather here in NJ is PERFECT.
