New System = Need ideas/help with trunk setup

Hey everyone!

I just bought a whole new system and need some ideas for a trunk setup but first i'll list what i got:

JL Audio 13w6v2 in JL Sealed Box
JL Audio e1800d 800 watts to Sub
JL Audio e2150 to Drive highs
Diamond Audio M361 Components
Diamond Audio M361i for rear fill

And i already have a Alpine 9835 for Head Unit.

So, with so much money spent on my system, i want it to look nice. My plan is to build the amps into the floor with maybe a plexiglass window to show off amps. I found a few people who've done it, but needed some pics/idea on how to pull it off. I really liked Image's setup, with the glow to show off the amps. I'm going to be doing myself and could use all the help i can get. I found a few in the "Show off your system" thread, but i went through as many as i could before i gave up. So it would be awesome if anyone had pics of setups similar or recomended to what i want to do.

Thank in advanced!! I'll post pics of the setup once i get it in.

Thanks for the compliments on equipment, makes me feel even better about spending my hard earned $$ on it lol.

Here's a picture of Image's Setup. Would like to something pretty much like that, but with the two amps side be side and maybe crossovers in the middle.

Yeah, the 13w6v2 is a beast. I got the one in the factory JL Sealed box and it looks like it was barely clear the top of the trunk. I thought about a W7, but to do that would require the slash series amps because of their stupid 3 ohm rating. And i've read that the W6's have better sound quality anyways, which is what i'm going for.

I can't wait to get it all it, i'll have pics of it all hooked up after the weekend!! Right now just trying to lay out how the trunk is going to look.

Also, how much do you think it would be worth bumping up an extra $120 for Hex's? I can get a set for 260-280 i think. But didn't know if it would be worth it or not for the money. Any advice?

I personally love the Hex components. If you are going to cough up the extra dough for the Hex's, I would also highly consider the Rainbow's. Just a suggestion though.

JL in don's car was like a test phase, plus thats when those amps were just coming out. He's not a big fan, and I don't think he liked the sq.

Ya there's not enough cleaning stuff to be his garage LoL

Hey Ryan... just take a little cruise over here sometime. I'll hook it up for you.

I just got my truck back. They had to rewire my remote for my amp. Turns out when the remote start unit was running my truck, my speakers would feedback any vibration through the wires and to the amp, causing the subs to thump. All fixed, now I have to just get my stupid airbag light to go off. Hopefully the computer will reset tonight.

Hey KC, glad to hear your trucks back up and running. That thing must pound. Yeah, if i need any serious help maybe a 7hr drive will be worth it .

Any advice on if i do the amps in plexiglass window how to keep the amps cool? Do i need some sort of fan down there?

I would recommend one. Just too keep the air circulating. I've seen a couple of setups where there wasn't one.

Actually, it puts it about right. If you take a look at the power rating Chart its just above optimum. And When i have a 3 year free replacement warrantee where i'm buying it, its all good .

It should handle it well and be pretty loud.

Yeah, plan on it. I got it for a really good deal, so i thought, what the heck. It'll be a good amp for whatever subs i do later on.

Dissapointed...

Well guys, i got the system put in today. I had a installer do it for me, i don't have the time to do it. Quite frankly, i'm a bit dissapointed. Its not the bass, beleive me, the bass is huge! But that wasn't the thing i was most concerned about, its the sound quality.

The sub sound quality is amazing, but the speakers are not putting out. I like my music loud and i can barely hear it over the sub. And when i get the speakers pretty loud, the high's cut out completely (like no sound), until i turn it down. At first i was like, okay, maybe there's some setting s i can play with. Well, since i got a 2 channel amp instead of a 4channel to run highs, i can't play fader at all. Which is pretty annoying because i seem to hear the backs more. But when i checked out settings on amp, ofcourse bass boost was on, the input sensitivity was all the way up on the sub amp. The input sensitivity was down on the 2channel. I figured though he thought i was the usual "all i want is bass kid", so i expected those settings. So i turned amp down, turned bb off, and the highs still didn't come out loud or clear enough.

Am i missing something here? I exepcted this system to blow my old one away with 50 watts going to each speaker w/mbquarts, now i have 75 and i'm really dissapointed. I'll be taking it back there sometime next week to see what we can get figured out. But anyone have any suggestions for me? I miss the audiophile setup i had last time, where it sounded like i had a guitar amps and a band playing in my car. I guess for right now it'll be bouncing quarters off my trunk for entertainment.

Some Pics

Here are some pics of it now, just some quick ones i took in the garage when it was dark. They did a good job on the install. Love the matching amps . And the Sub sinks because my stock cover for the spare caved in. so i'll be fixing that soon.

The amp was not tuned correctly. The mids and highs shouldn't be cutting out. I know my mids and highs don't even come close to keeping up with the subs. Maybe you are overdriving them in trying to do this. Where are the gains set?

I had it set to about 3/4 or 75%, maybe a little less. On my deck it went up to 22 and it started to cut out. Not nearly as loud as my last setup too, i'd hear distortion and i'd turn it down. When i didn't have any amps setup, the deck would somtimes reset if i had it turned up enough. I figured this would be normal , as it was trying to save the speakers, but that was mainly only when i was running off battery for a long time. I'm always running the car with amps now.

Yeah, they did a nice job. If only it'd sound as good as it looks

Spend some time playing with that amp as well as the settings on the deck. You will find a better spot.

yeah, i'll try again messeing with stuff tomorrow. There's just not a whole lot to change on amps. And the deck is all crossover stuff, but i guess i can mess with it some more. Not having a fader kinda sux though. I think i'm going to try and rig up some 8 ohm resistors to the back to get more of a front stage. That might help.

I highly recommend trying a lower gain. Start at 0 and eek it up. Don't try and match the mids and highs to the sub. Match the sub to the mids and highs. It took Kevin and I 2 hrs trying to find the best setting for my Type-R's. The subs can drown them out with ease. I tuned the sub so that at 0 sub level on the deck was a nice low level on the subs.

I thought the 9835 had a fader built in? My 9833 does.

Yeah deck has a fader, but with the way i am running the 2 channel amp, i lose my fader function. Its 2 channel stereo right now. What it does is wire 2 4ohm speakers into one channel which makes a 2 ohm load (Left channel) and visa versa on right channel. Presenting 75 watts to each speakers. The guy said they do it all the time, so i went with it.

Hey, on your 9833 do you have just a plain old treble and bass control? I hate not having one on mine, i have to mess with all these eq settings.

Thanks for the input Filter...i appreciate it.

I'm trying to think positive right now, cause i feel i just spent 1500 dollars on some bass and that's it. So still trying to swallow that. I hope i can get it to sound good.

9833 and 9835 have eq's. PITA to tune. I wrote my settings down so I wouldn't have to retune it. Did the guy who installed it know how to tune that deck?

As far as the wiring, that is common. I am using a 4 channel and retain that option.

You will find the sweet spot in time.

Thanks Filter.

No i don't think the installer messed with anything on the deck, because the internal amp on the deck was still on. Maybe i'll get a few eq's setup and put them on a cd and do it from there. Thanks again fro your help!

When I changed the battery in my car, I lost all settings. The tweets were popping and cracking. The mids were non-existant. This could be part of the issue. You will need the manual to figure it out. I keep mine in the glove box for reference.
