Recommendations for sub/amp please
Recommendations for sub/amp please
Hi all.
I need something decent for the car.
Want to spend ~500 for sub/amp [use stock bose HU]
I would make the box and do the install myself.
I need a recommendation of what sub/amp to get.
I like the way JL looks, and according to reviews, it is a great woofer.
I wanted to get just 1, and an amp to power it.
Which sub would be right for me? I like when I could feel the bass, and listen to all kinds of music, including rock and rap.
Thanks for your help.
Also, when hooking it up, I guess I can connect the amp to the rear speakers? And do I have to run a wire for power from the battery? Or is there a connector in the trunk already?
Thanks for all your help again.. please remember, when it comes to car audio, I am a complete newbie.

Just a tad over the $500 dollar mark, but should sound very nice.

I'll throw in my recommendation of Memphis here. M-Class are very versatile and won't break your budget. I run 4 12"s in my truck with their MC500D amp for right now.

What prices do you want to know? I know most of them by heart, if not I'm good friends with the local dealer.
Plus Don (pearl96max) is not that far away from you. He's also a dealer for Memphis and other brands. He'll be the best one to hook you up.

Well M-Class 12" subs run $120 ish each. A MC500D amp will kill your budget though, it runs right around $450 for brand new ones. But the MC500D amp is a very good amp. Mine has been doing really well even pushing 4 12"s.
You could always go with their PR line, I believe since they started their street edge or whatever, they're trying to get rid of the PR line. I notice my dealer was selling PR 12" subs for right around $70 each. Some places will work on a deal package. Subs, box, and amp.
I can tell you from experience, 1 12" PR sub in a vented box and 300 watts of power will give you some definant boom. Though the PR cannot take a excessive amount of punishment.
I hooked up the system found on my frontier site handy work page for my brother in law. It conisisted of a 12" PR in a vented box, with a 620 watt Logic amp. It sounded awesome, till my father-in-law drove the car one day. Turns out he likes it when a car vibrates. Too bad he didn't realize he pushed the sub WAY past it's limit.
I prefer the M-Class myself because they're more versatile than the PR. (that and the cone looks way awesome)
I think if you go with this setup listed below, you'll have more than enough thump to satisfy you.

or you could go with the PR sub, and see if the local dealer has any of the old MCD500 amps like mine.

ED has two subs + amp for under 500 .. [around 420]
That is why I was considering them.
I dont really care who the owner is. The subs look good as per specs, but I have never heard them.
So my initial questions remains:
How would
[2] 11kv.2 subwoofers
+
NINe.2x
sound?
Thanks for your help. If you post alternatives, please name the price[s].
Thanks again.

lol. well when the sub breaks due to a manufacturing defect and they claim it was your fault and give you the "new" version of the sub for like $200 and it takes 3 months to get it, we'll see whos complaining.
go with something reliable like some diamond mid level subs and a decent 400-600 watt amp.

I may have taken a chance on this but...
Kicker S10L54 sub from eBay = $120 (shipping included)
Ported enclosure from eBay = $40 ($9 for box, $29 for shipping) - tuned to 32-34Hz
Kicker square grille = $25 (shipping included)
Subtotal = $185 for sub & enclosure
$315 left over for the amp of your choice. I'd suggest MA Audio or Phoenix Gold Octane-R series for the price (check eBay).
Just a suggestion - I love my L5 sub in that box! Doesn't take up a lot of trunk space and it kicks hard and sounds just great. I have a refurbished Profile California 600MSX mono sub amp ($60 directly from the manufacturer) running it at 2-Ohms and it does the job for me.
Good sounding bass for under $300. It may not compete in SPL competitions, but that's not my goal.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do, bro! Everybody gives pretty good advice around here, so I'd follow what leads you the best.

I got two kicker 12L5's running off of a legacy LA2070. Not the best amp but it put's out and it doesn't sound like cheap material. It actually surprised me as I was expect a amp that would just go loud but the amp has a good x-over and can actually do it's job withot overheating (well I played it three hours straight at about 75% volume and it was surprisingly cool to the touch. I am playing it at 2 ohms and the gain and bass boost is all the way down for better sq. I was very shocked and felt that I could have went longer without it overheating as long as it has adequate space to "breathe". 2400 watt amp matching my subs max power.
