overheating of amp

I have an eclipse 4212 2-channel amp, which is capable of pumping 130 watts RMS x 2 channels when the gain is turned up all the way. However, I'm afraid that if I do that that the amp will heat up and eventually cut off or automatically lower the volume on the head unit. Is there a way to have the gain all the way up and prevent the overheating? Cuase I wanna be able to get the most of my amp and still enjoy the music for long periods at a time, like when I'm on a trip for example. Thanks.

Read this.

This will give you a better understanding on what gain is and ways to set it.

ok so basically what I have to do is turn the gain on my amp all the way down, then the volume on my head unit all the way up, and then slowly turn the gain up unit I hear distortion, and then turn it down a bit. However, what if I can't figure out if what I'm hearing is distortion or not, or what if I simply don't hear any? Can I leave the gain up all the way, or will the amp overheat?

you can try to use the DMM method to set the gains.

ok, i'll do that, but I'd like to be able to have the volume on the head unit up all the way all the time when I listen to music, and then adjust the volume via a separate remote ****, which is what my Diamond Audio sub amp has, a wire that connects from the sub to a little box with a **** which I can use to adjust from min to max. Anybody know if of any 2 channel amps that have that feature as well? Just like I have the sub/non-fader control on my head unit all the way up, I'd like to be able to have the volume all the way up too.

Theres no typical A/B amps like that. Its intended for control over subs.

Keep in mind when you raise the volume, you also raise the distortion. If you want louder, get a more powerful amp.

Both my PPI PC 2600 2 channel and my Fosgate 500a2 2 channel amps have the remote feature.

ok cool thanks. Lastly, my sub has an RMS wattage of 150. However, my sub amp has an RMS wattage of 300 (I couldn't find a lower wattage sub amp from any of these hi-end manufacturer's: MB Quart, Diamond Audio, Eclipse, Focal, DLS, or Rainbow) I feel that 150 watts RMS for a sub is good enough for me cause I dont' want much bass at all. My question is, would I be able to use 150 watts in the gain-setting formula instead of using 300 (which is what the amplifier puts out) I'd hate to have to change the sub or amp. I think as long as I use 150 in the formula and have the gain low, I should be fine and not bust the sub. Am I right?
