ummm, all you need is something to cut out the sheet metal! although, not really sure why you want to replace 6.5 inch with 6x9....to each their own i guess

Why are you looking to do this? If you want to decrease your SQ be my guest but as Lytheum said, sound is round, not oval. What exactly is your goal with the system, are you adding them to try and get midbass? Because I highly doubt any 5x7 will do that, maybe a 6x9, but why not put 8" components or something useful in there thatll still give you great SQ. And what is your current system, anything?

Ok i'll try and give you some useful information. If you haven't noticed we don't agree with what you're trying to do. Essentially because it really won't sound better. a good pair or 6.5 inch speakers will basically sound better then putting in 5x7 or 6x9. It doesn't make sense to do all the necessary work for worse sound.

to what everyone said so far, but if you're determined, get a dremel and have at it. i guess you can also make some baffles out of MDF to mount to the stock locations as well.

I changed my rears on my 97 to 6X9, it sounded alot better.

I have subs in my 95 so 6.5s are fine.

don't bother switch to 6x9's, really. i did it cus i didnt feel like selling them and finding 6.5s, but it was hardly worth it, just get 6.5s.

If you're still going to, a dremel works, but its still a PIA

for the price and time put into getting good thump from 8's in the doors or something similar, i recommend a sub. but it all depends on what you define as "thump".

Get some eD Eu-700s and amp them. But really...a cheap sub, pre-fab box and amp wouldn't take up much room anyways.

I would run a High Quality pair of 6 x 9's any day of the week over 6 1/2's in the Rear Deck lid (even got tilted risers or spacers in my 1971 mustang facing front cabin), people tend to talk about even sound dispersion, cone shapes and motors allot, but I've been using 6 x 9's, Polks, Infinity, JBL, Clarion, since 1980 and they always sounded much better by far with allot more Bass and still had Crystal Clear Highs than their little round counterparts, 3-way, 4-ways or 5 ways mids and tweets, depending upon how much Treble you like and I like Rock and Metal, so the more drivers the better, bring it ! :-) I've also installed many Amps, Decks, parallel, series, had $5k component systems, $1k component systems and $500 factory systems with upgraded speakers only, all good...6 x 9's ROCK !
