Coworker GAVE me a JL Audio 10w7... Now need an amp!
The guy just dropped that beast on me and my puny Kenwood KAC-819 amp (150w RMS @ 4 ohms). I built a sealed box for it to JL's specs, but needless to say I need more juice.
Here's what I've been considering -- the Kenwood KAC-9102D:
http://www.millionbuy.com/kenkac9102d.html
I can get it refurbed (or new from eBay) for around $155 shipped.
I know it's going to be a damn sight better than what I have, so no need to reiterate that. But does anyone have any indepth experience with it, or other ideas on what I should get?
Just to give you an idea, my 4-channel is a 50w RMS x 4 Clarion amp: it's plenty loud for my purposes, and volume-wise the sub is easily able to keep up even with that puny amp. So the ONLY reason for getting a new amp would be sound quality.
Also, I have separate 8-gauge power wires feeding my main 4-channel amp and my sub amp, and no capacitor. I've never had the lights dim on me at idle with max volume on my current system, so I'm assuming there's nothing terribly wrong with my alternator or battery. Will I still need thicker wiring or a cap?
EDIT: More amp ideas a few posts down...

Funny, I just did that 9102d on two audiobahn 12s at Circuit two days ago. It clipped, cut out, and he brought it back blaming us, even though he brought us all his equipment and all we did was install/tune it.
Whats your budget for an amp?
Depends on what sub amp you go with, whether you need to upgrade from 8 gauge. Not to mention its kind of redundant running two separate 8 gauge power kits. Upgrade if youve got the money.

My budget is as cheap as I can possibly be without getting something that sucks. If it turns out I absolutely can't get what I need for this price, I'll wait longer and buy something later.
This Kenwood amp just seems like a great deal... great power, good brand name, class D, and very well priced. Am I wrong?

He also has a JL Audio 450/4 and a 1000/1, but he said he definitely wants to sell those. I'd take them but I'm nowhere near being in a position to buy them and all the extra support apparatus that I would need and use them properly (sturdier box, big power wiring, caps, new wiring for the main speakers, lots of sound deadening and rattle-fixing, etc.). Plus it'd be WAY overkill for my purposes.

Seems the Ikesound suggestion was a good one. Here's what I picked out:
HiFonics BX1000D
Pioneer GM-7100M
Directed Audio 1100d (refurb)
Directed Audio 750d (refurb)
Opinions?

I have a brand new JL Audio 500/1 mono amp still in the box that I'd sell for $370 shipped. This is the right amp to run your sub. If you are interested, PM me. You don't want some crappy amp running a sub like that. I am going to post a "for sale" thread in a minute.

Thanks, but that's pretty far out of my price range at the moment... If that's the only kind of thing that'd be worth it then I'm going to have to wait a while, but if there is a decent solution in the interim I'd like to take it.

d00d, someone is selling a hifonics amp just like that one in the audio FS forums right now i believe...
also, -Red- is selling a Kicker zr1000 on ebay right now, just missed the chance to get it for 150 even.
good luck.

My current amp gives it around 200w continuous and honestly I don't need it to get any louder at all. My ONLY concern is sound quality.
So, I really don't know how much power I need. All I know is that JL's site says I should give the sub a bare minimum of 250 watts continuous, and optimum is around 500.

If that doesn't work out for you, you might look into Planet Audio (I think someone mentioned them above). I got mine from an ebay seller for like $130 shipped and it is 600x1@2ohms-and is 1 ohm stable. Pretty good power for the money and sounds decent too.
It all just depends where your priorities are. I only care $300 worth about how my car stereo sounds-but I care >$1000 what my home audio sounds like. (and then there's damn school which apparently I care >$10k worth)
