passport 8500 x50 or the V1. these are the two best out right now. which one wins depends on who's report you read

For under $100 your not getting a radar detector, just a noise maker.

You don't want to pay more than $100 because you CHOOSE NOT to, whereas if you get a $300 ticket you HAVE to pay it. Just pay the $200+ and get a good radar detector.

Just remember, if they aren't using radar/conventional laser and instead are using aircraft or 'instant on' laser...you ARE screwed anyway.

If you don't spend $300-$400 for the good detectors that people have listed above, then you won't have much protection. At your age, a ticket will increase your insurance substantially and I am afraid that a $100 noise maker (as it was accurately called above) will give you a false sense of security.

Just drive the speed limit (or with the flow of traffic) or shell out the cash for a good detector.

For all the people that are against radar detectors, ponder this. If it saves you twice, you've paid for it and dont have the points on your license.

By jammer, I assume you mean laser jammer. Radar jammers are illegal in all 50 states and are Class 5 felony. Laser jammers however are completely legal in all states except for Virginia and Washington DC. Other states have RESTRICTIONS on use, but contrary to popular belief VA and DC are the only places that they are completely illegal.

I have a passport 8500 x50, and I plan to add the Escort Shifter ZR3 soon. Its a beautiful thing, however NO DETECTOR WILL PROTECT YOU FROM LASER. The V1 scored highest in the laser detection part of many independant tests, but laser detection is pretty useless.

Bottom line, if you want to be protected from laser and radar, you need to spend about 800 dollars. If you're only looking to spend 100 on a detector, save your money and slow down, it wont help you. Even with a good detector, you will still get tickets if you are stupid (IE: zipping around town at 80-90 mph).

I have to agree with the above.. I had a radar detctor in my Mustang and always figured I would be safe from the po po's but it's not always the case. Instant ON + Speeding = Screwed! Same with Lydar / Laser. I don't think I have seen anything under $100 that is going to help you. You would be better off spending the money on something else. Since I got the Maxi I haven't even installed my radar detector I just drive more carefully..

V1 although I agree with the above posts, it is going to give you a false sense of security so if u get one don't abuse its power

slow down?

anyhow, 8500 or V1. i myself have the 8500. even so i don't trust it 100%...radar detectors tend to give people a false sense of security.

Get a Valentine One!!

The Valentine One is the best radar/laser detector on the market today.

http://guysoflidar.com/shootout05/pop.html

http://guysoflidar.com/shootout05/spectre.html

http://motortrend.com/features/consu...r_buyersguide/

"This year, the measurement of the radar and laser detection abilities of each of the over $200 units gives the Valentine One ($400) a small edge over the competing BEL Vector 995 ($260) and Escort Passport 8500 X50 ($300 with red display or $340 with a blue display) units."

V1 is the best in laser detection:

http://www.radardetector.net/viewtop...213&highlight=

V1 has the best rear radar detection because it is the only detector with 2 antennas to locate radar:

http://www.radardetector.net/viewtop...214&highlight=

V1 is the least detectable detector by RDD's or Radar Detector Detectors in states where radar detectors are illegal. The Spectre III is the most used RDD in the world and it can only pick up the Valentine One if it is 166 feet or closer which is better than the X50 which can be detected 954 feet away.

http://www.radardetector.net/viewtop...383&highlight=

The Valentine One which accounts for only .6% of radar detector sales wins every poll when it comes to being the favorite detector. The X50 doesn't even get an approval rating as high as George Bush's worst rating.

RX-65

X50

Radar Roy from Radarbusters.com said this about the Valentine One, "Just spoke with Carl Fors from SML, his website will be going online tonight with the 2005 results. He has declared the V895, 8500 and the Valentine One as the top performers. Motortrend, who was also at the test, will be declaring the Valentine One as the top detector based upon its detection of laser.

http://www.radardetector.net/viewtop...=4696&start=90

Radar Roy said, "There were results that they (Guys of Lidar) got during the test that I was not exactly pleased with, such as the discovery of the Blinder not having Stealth Mode installed and the Valentine beating out the Escort and Bel in the range tests. Even though I don’t sell the Valentine, it does have slightly better range than both the RX65 and the 8500 and I also show this same fact on my site. Would love it to be the other way around."

Here is a link and video of the V1 alerting to radar quicker than the X50 and sometimes the X50 didn't alert to the radar at all. They are quick pulling the radar guns trigger and the X50 is filtering it out and the V1 is picking it up every time.

V1 wins in POP detection:

http://media.putfile.com/JammerTestscom_tests_V1X50_POP

V1 wins because it detects laser gun in stealth mode while the X50 remains silent:

1. Laser detection is dead freakin' useless. Laser beams don't refract and bounce around NEARLY enough, so by the time you detect it you've already been marked. If you want laser protection, buy a jammer. Blinder makes the best jammers, period -- end of story. They don't have the neato direct interface with some Escort and Bel radar detectors, but they're definitely more effective.

2. The only differences between the Passport 8500 X50 and the Bel Pro RX65 are that the RX65 has voice alerts and can detect Ku-band radar, which isn't in real use yet but is apparently coming soon. Other than that, they are INTERNALLY IDENTICAL. Literally. If anyone tells you their detection abilities are different, it's because of some fluke in the test -- the difference is going to be so insignificant in real life that it's not even worth considering.

3. V1 isn't that great. It's just very, very seriously hyped. It has sort of a roller-coaster track record, sometimes being the best and sometimes not even being a contender. Its only consistent advantage is that it's the most difficult to detect by RDDs -- and since so few of them are sold, there isn't much of a chance that anyone will be investing a lot of time and money in figuring out how to get around that.

Don't be fooled by the above post. As I said above, laser (LIDAR) detection is useless no matter how good your detector is at it, so it's pretty silly to say "V1 is the best" just because it detects laser. If laser is what your friendly neighborhood cops are using, a V1 is little more than an expensive and highly effective ticket notifier. Rear radar protection is kinda silly too... if a cop manages to sneak up on you in a big honkin' Crown Victoria with a light rack and a distinctive paint job at a time when you really should be checking your mirrors periodically anyway, you deserve to be caught (hell... he probably already saw you anyway, and is just following you to wait for a convenient time to pull you over or just to see if he can get you for anything else while he's at it).

And the approval rating thing is total BS. Valentine's hype is so big that they have everyone believing in it whether they own one or not, and there's a massive placebo effect associated with throwing down $400 for a boutique item that works very well and has those little arrows. Besides, what is that poll supposed to mean in the first place? "Only 0.6% of people actually BUY the product, but everyone SAYS it's good!" Um...

Plus, in that entire post, was there a single mention of false alerts? Strange, since V1's track record in that department has always been somewhere between "not very good" and "absolutely rock bottom", whereas Escort and Beltronics have always excelled in it...

Don't get me wrong, it's a really really really good detector. If it's range, sensitivity, and RDD immunity you want, then right now V1 is the best. Even Radar Roy admits it. But an Escort Passport 8500 X50 or Bel Pro RX65 will give you almost the same performance with fewer false alerts (i.e. practically none), and will cost you ~$100 less.

Hell, for the price of a V1 you could probably snag a Whistler Pro-73 and a Blinder M20 laser jammer... you'd sacrifice on range but you'd still pick up all types of radar, and you'd be totally safe from laser threats (at least in front).
