I would actually have placed the X5 last. Although its a solid car maintenence would rob your bank rapidly. Also not the easiest car to do Any upgrades to. Not to say that would be your priority, but even something simple like a remote start its a PITA. Certainly not the hardest car, but definately more difficult than the other two choices.
The Acura MDXs fit&finish is very comforting and well hell, its a fine vehicle to drive. But I think the price tag on them supersedes that. Ruling it out, at least for me it did.
The QX4/Pathfinder is a great choice with a proven solid VQ. Although I think the fit& finish of it is the least desirable of the three. Budget minded itll serve your purpose and still add a bit of class.
Also I wouldnt rule out the 4Runner. Which was actually my top choice when I was put in this dilemma. I of course went a different route and got the soccer dad vehicle for practicality.

Agreed that the MDX isnt worth its price. The QX4/Pathy is still a good choice, and definitely agree about upgrading, but the feel of driving a German engineered car, if you truly appreciate and enjoy driving, in my opinion is so superior to almost all other cars that it takes the cake. Also one of the reasons I like the FX, its still somewhat engineered to be a driver's car imo.

I agree completely to the X5 being a superior car to Drive, although like I said the maintenence as well as the gas would be a bank breaker. Most Bimmer owners dont take that into consideration prior to their purchase, they just wanna have a BMW and worry about the cons later.

Ah...completely forgot about the 4runner. Yes, I have been thinking about the maintenance costs associated w/ the X5 and I'm definitely not looking forward to expensive repairs and/or routine maintenance. I have to admit, the "vanity" factor is the only reason the X5 is even on the prospective list. My first inclination is to go w/ the QX4/Pathfinder but I will ahve to take a serious look at the 4runner.

Never ASSume Newb. ![Big Grin](https://maxima.org/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
He posted on the other thread his budget being sub $20K for that money a fairly newer X5 Certified would yield less options than a loaded version of the other choices....Then still gotta deal with gas prices.

BTW..ALOT of BMW owners dont really have the coin for a BMW, they just get in on excellent leasing options. In which case is what alot of the used/certified Bimmers are. When you know your not gonna actually own the vehicle you tend to drive it a bit harder, although the extensive testing/repairing that the certification requires would typically override that factor.

If he doesnt have the coin for it then he shouldn't have posted it. Common sense to me. I just love driving way too much to pick anything besides the X5 from those choices, money/maintenance aside, even if it had less options.

Overall my opinion of BMW ownership is this if you can afford the BMW you have to be able to afford the maintanence costs as well before you actually purchase it. This is why when/if I want to purchase an M3 I won't buy it until I can be sure I can afford the maintanence.

LOL @ the discussion of my finances. Anyway, I don't have the coin for a new car (period) but new baby demands that I get the wife something new(er) and reliable. I found a nice deal on a 2000 X5 from a private seller which is why I was considering it as an option. Also, I have a close friend who is a former BMW tech..so I know I can get his assistance (although not as good as a trip to the delaership) when needed. But, with all that being said, I am looking more closely at the QX4 and 4runner. But the BMW is soooo very tempting (and I would be one of the owners which Don speaks of lol)
Question: what warranty options are available if i purchase from a private seller? I have a sneaking suspicion the answer is "none"

Max = 158k, Alti = 4700 miles ![Nod](https://maxima.org/forums/images/smilies/nod.gif)
You can buy a warranty from an outside company but that is usually not worth it. If there is anything left on the dealer warranty I would contact bmw and see about extending it...... (I would opt for the lifetime warranty option![hide](https://maxima.org/forums/images/smilies/hide.gif)
